Happy New Year!!!
What are your resolutions for the New Year? It’s important to set long term goals, “I’m going to be a better Mother this year,” or, “I’m going to get more organized.” But do you know exactly how you’re going to accomplish these far reaching goals? How are you going to get from “tripping over your clutter” to “everything neatly put away”? You need smaller goals but more than that you need habits. Habits are for lazy people like us who don’t want to think about everything we have to do every day. If our brain can subconsciously do all the work while we go throughout our day we will be much more efficient. So let’s start today by making new habits that will turn us into the kind of people we’ve always dreamt we could be!
Sadly, I haven’t done this for several months but I used to choose one small goal at a time and work on it until it became a habit. Then I picked a new goal to work on. Now is a great time to start doing this again and I want you to do it with me which is why I’m starting a new feature here at The Lazy Organizer.
SMART Habit Saturday
SMART stands for: Saving Money, Associations, Resources and Time
Money – Are you wasting money because you don’t send in your bills on time and you end up paying late fees? Are you paying for things two or three our four times because you’re buying on credit and paying interest? Are you paying for luxuries that you don’t really need?
Associations – Are your relationships strained because you can’t make it to appointments on time? Is your family mad at you because the house is a mess and you’re mad at them because they don’t help? Do your kids feel like they come last because you overload your schedule?
Resources – Have you ever had to buy something again because you lost it or it got broken from improper care? Are you wasting water because you forgot to wash your little soccer player’s uniform and now you have to do a load for only two items? Are you feeling tired because you’re not eating right and getting the exercise you need? Are you delaying a visit to your doctor or dentist instead of taking care of yourself?
Time – Are you frequently forgetting appointments? Do you run around all day and feel like you never really accomplish anything? Do you feel like you give every breath of yourself to others and you want to start making time for yourself?
Pick one small daily habit that you want to develop and post about it. Then on Saturday Morning come back and leave a link so that we can read all about it. What’s it going to be?
-Floss your teeth every night?
-Go for a walk three times a week?
-File five papers ever morning after breakfast?
-Put one load of laundry in the washing machine every night and in the morning dry it and put it away?
-Clean out your car every time you get home?
-Repack your purse or diaper bag or briefcase every day?
-Make your bed every morning?
-Clean off your kitchen counter every night?
-Take your planner with you every where you go, even to bed?
-Check your Return Cupboard before you go anywhere and every time you have friends and family over?
-Go to bed an hour earlier every night or get up thirty minutes earlier every morning?
We can make huge changes in our lives by taking one small step at a time so I hope you will do this with me. We’ve all heard that it takes 21 days for something new to become a habit so it will take more than a week to develop your new SMART Habit. You can work on one habit at a time or you can start a new one every week while continuing to work on your previous habits. I can’t wait to see you back here on Saturday so we can inspire each other!
Until then, leave a link to your New Year’s post. I want to read all about the fabulous New Year you have ahead of you!

Happy New Years!
My New Year's Resolution is just for the month of January! How's that for small steps! Actually what I meant is that I will evaluate and move on at the end of Jan.
Great new feature! I have found that blogging about something really helps with accountability.
I second what Jane just said with the accountability! And I love the fact that there's a "checkpoint" each Saturday. That will allow me to post openly and honestly about how I did that week. And I can look at my progress on a week-by-week basis. (Thank goodness for the category capabilities of blogging!)
Here's to a happier and more successful 2007!
fabulous post! I do need to develop so many new habits in the coming year. I do know where I want to start too. how about that? ;)
Thanks for the help. I set a few goals and I hope I can do them well!! Happy 2007!
I'm with you Lara. I also think the accountability will be a big motivator for me. You'd think being accountable to my DH would be enough but it's not. Thanks for the push!
Great idea...I'm joining in!
Thanks,
Misti
I'm joining in too! I have lots of things I need to improve on, but taking it one day at a time....
I was short of time this week to write a new post (what does that say about my time management techniques?) so I hope it is acceptable to pull out an older post that still is applicable. My husband and I were worried about spending enough one on one time with our four children so we can up with a system that rewarded the kids with parent-child activities and other time-related things. It's been hugely successful, the kids work for and plan their "date night" with us months in advance.
Laura, I love this idea and will have to visit the other posts.
I was sure I had linked properly! Sorry!
I found this sight through a link on Kristis blog. I am so glad I did!I've actually been trying to get orginised this year, but just didn't know where to start! I'm a list person, I make lists for everything! But I'm still not orginised, especially with household chores. I'm going to make a habit of cleaning the kitchen every night before I go to bed. I like the laundry idea too, but then I will have to wake up earlier! So that's already 3 changes! I'll see how that goes and let you know next saturday :)
Wow, I just discovered this site but it's great. It's never too late to start right. I'm going to make a habit of having all my clothes ready for the morning, including stuff to go back to school, so I can leave the house less stressed. I have a long way to go with good habits. Yikes.
You've inspired me to work on a new habit each month. My goal for May: daily morning prayers
Great Idea, I hope it works for everyone and myself! i'm new
I am totally confused. Where do I begin? Samantha PS Is there another Samantha in this list? I didn't see one, but here I see a comment left by Samantha- but that is not me... help!!

am i meant to see my comment join onto the other comments straight away?
ok i can see me now i think ive got it.this is exactly what i have been looking for. i dont know where to start but im going to go for small goals instead of overwhelming myself with impossible ones.
One of my a-ha moments this week was how much stress I add to my life by not being honest: saying, "Yeah, that sounds great," to a dinner invitation I don't intend (or want) to keep; making an open-ended offer for babysitting/painting help/coaching a soccer team (and hoping I'm not actually called to the task); or saying, "Maybe," to my children, when I really mean no (and then they pester me about it many, many times until I either give in or become quite annoyed.)
It's hard to be organized when you're maximized. Often, my feelings of overwhelment stem from too many commitments that don't speak to how I truly wish to spend my time.
My SMART habit is honesty: being willing to endure the temporary discomfort of saying no; to be more concerned with having my behaviors and my beliefs match (integrity) than having others like me; to decline graciously, rather than say yes and feel resentful.
This will be new territory for a former, consumate people pleaser. But I believe, in the end, everyone will benefit: as my yes, truly becomes a yes, and my no, a no.
happy belated new year
or would that be happy old year by now?
I would very much like to join SMART habit Saturday. I've linked to my goals for 2008 which you can see include to blog on a more regular basis (and so far..so good) and to work on menu planning as a way to eat better (again so far- so good). I will be 23 weeks pregant on Monday and I found this site from the Ordinary Mom site which I linked to from my sister-in-law.
Is this still going on? I want in! I haven't seen any recent posts...help?
I know I am getting a late start here but I figure it is better to start now than wait another day! So.. here is to making the big dreams come true- one small habit at a time!
Okay, so I read your handy little note about linking to a specific post AFTER I linked you to my entire blog- sorry! I guess I am still not sure how this works. For now you can just erase my name and I will figure it out and try again! Thanks.
I am adopting a baby from Guatemala, my first baby, at 51 years old. I am going to need all the input I can get! Please help... I want in!
