The Lazy Planner
Plan? Me? It’s an astonishing thought but I do own a small planner of my very own and every once in a while I actually look at it! I am not an expert in planner usage although I’ve tried many different types, beautiful and expensive, yet the one I have now, not expensive and so not beautiful, is working for me. When I use it. Which is the important thing. Finding one that works for you AND using it!
I don’t have a problem writing things down. If I run out of something, I write it in my planner. If someone tells me about a great book to read, I write it in my planner. It has taken years but I have finally learned to say, “I need to check my planner first,” before I schedule anything. I don’t know why I always feel like a dummy when I say that but I do. Like I’m supposed to remember each one of the three things I have planned that week! What do you expect people? I guess it’s kind of sad that a woman who has a schedule comprised mostly of “Clean the house” and “Go to the gym” can’t remember what’s on her agenda that week.
I don’t have a problem taking my Lazy Planner everywhere I go. I keep it in the Tomato except when I’m working out and then it’s in my gym bag. Why would I need my planner at the gym you ask? In case I have to re-schedule tennis or tumbling for the kids, write down a class I want to take, or I run into someone who wants to hire a sweaty Organizer to host a new segment on TV. That could happen!
So here’s my good thing goin’. My $4 planner. I got it all dressed up for its internet debut.
For some reason I just couldn't get excited about the puppies
and Lovely is far more likely to leave it alone without them. Those puppies were just irresistible! I was inspired by a member of The Lazy Organizer's club, Rosie. She came home with the same adorable puppies and took things into her own hands. She kept asking when I was going to cover mine but I just couldn't picture myself ever making it to a scrapbook store to buy cute paper. She told me to use my fabric instead so I did!
First I write birthdays in it. Not that I send anyone a birthday card or even call them on their birthdays. But at least I like to think about them on their special day. Then the next time I see them I can say, “Hey, I was thinking about you on your birthday.” I think that makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
If you happen to lose your planner or you want to upgrade midway through the year then you might want to go with a Student planner that runs from July-August. That’s what I did this year because I needed something a little different.
Cutting the corners off the pages as I go makes it easy for me to find the page I’m on.
I like to use sticky notes in the front of my planner so I don’t clutter it up with shopping lists.
Again, I write everything down. EVERYTHING. Here are some of the things I compulsively write in my planner besides appointments.
- What we ate for dinner.
- What all the girls wore to church - so we don’t wear the same thing four weeks in a row. There is no way I can remember that on my own. I can’t even remember what I wore yesterday.
- Important calls that I probably won’t ever make.
- Errands that I don’t want to run.
- Books that I don’t have time to read.
- Library due dates. Just kidding! I always forget that one but I’m going to start remembering, I swear. In fact I'm going to do it right now!
- I write down when I lend a book or movie to someone and then I’m too embarrassed to ask for it back.
- I used to make a note when I owed my kids money but now I just tell them to write it in their checkbooks. You really have to try my checkbook system with your kids. I works!!! And Mary? I just can’t say enough about Mary.
What kind of planner do you use? What do you write in your planner?
Check out PocketMod for the Stranger in your life who uses a piece of paper as a planner and has a rubber band for a wallet. (I kid you not!)

Planner? You mean you shouldn't just write notes everywhere and then wonder why you can't coordinate everything and get the store and completely miss something that was on the list you didn't bring?
That pocketmod system looks pretty cool. I love that you can customize it to whatever you want in it. My favorite one I've had in the past was a Mom planner- but I haven't boughten one for this year.
Thanks for the inspiration!
I LOVE your planner! You are so talented!
I organize my life and run my household, and make up my shopping lists in a gigantic zippered binder-thingy with lots of file folder pockets for all of those things that I am supposed to be reading for homeschooling purposes but don't always get around to! Your organizer is definitely prettier!
That is so funny about the rubberband as a wallet - my husband has started doing that. I have never heard of anyone else doing that.
I use planner's on & off. I like the idea of one I just need to stick to one. Maybe I'll try your idea. You sure do have some good organizational ideas I have adopted into my household.
Thanks
~Betty~
your husband upgraded to a rubberband huh? ;) my dh just threw stuff in his pockets for years. I made him use a wallet after he ruined the third debit card.
oh and I'm cracking up that you write down what the girls wore to church but only because I read that and thought "ooooh good idea!" my dh just doesn't get why I care. dude. it's important!
I LOVE your fabric cover; I so wish I was crafty enough to do things like that, but cannot sew at all. I have fallen in love with the planner I'm using now and use it much the same way that you do. It's a little bigger than average, but I typically have a tote bag with me. Here's my note about mine: http://peanutbutterandjellyinthevcr.blogspot.com/2007/01/wfmw-best-plannercalendar-ever.html
i'm the same way about my planner, i love it and i always have to have ti with me at all times. i'm completely anal though and i couldn't find the perfect planner to fit my needs, so i went out and bought a 3-ring binder for 5.5"x8.5" (half sheet) and designed my own on my computer. then i print out new pages as needed, or design new pages as needed. it works for me like nothing else has.
I'm a write-it-down-to-forget-it type. I compulsively write in my planner and on our family calendar, but never remember to look. Haven't found the solution to this problem yet!
I love your planner cover and cutting off the edges is a great idea!! I like the idea of the post-it notes! I used to always clutter every page until I had to use different colored pens and highlighters...then you just couldn't read anything. Now, I have just been using a calendar online.
I got so sick of copying things from my work calendar to my day planner, that I finally got a palm pilot (for Christmas). I LOVE IT. Every day I sync my palm with my work calendar and tasks. Then when I am away from work if I need to schedule something, I put it in my palm. Then when I get back to work I sync it, and the item goes onto my work calendar. No thinking required! I am using a software program that I love that organizes just about any list or thing you want to keep track of. I heart technology!
I'm a Palm girl myself but I love your small planner. I do want to ask a question. If you can't remember what your girls wore yesterday, what makes you think anyone at church will remember what they wore last week? I know I do the same thing with my girls but now that I think of it, it seems pretty silly to be concerened about :)
