Organize Your Rock Collection

Do you see what a special rock this is? It's a heart rock. I brought it all the way home with me from Pismo Beach last week and I even found it on Christmas day! We spent hours looking for lost hearts on the beach that day. Every Mother knows the joys of having kids that come home with their pockets full of rocks and sticks and dirt after every outdoor excursion. Each little thing has so much meaning. Each treasure is so precious. Every beloved item is one of a kind. But let’s get real. You can only allow so many rocks in the house before you have to start smuggling them back out to the garden with the rest of the one of a kind rocks and sticks, especially those that find their way into the wash and turn the dryer into the moon’s surface. Those REALLY have to go!

A few years ago I came up with an ingenious plan. I told the kids I wanted to start collecting heart rocks and I invited them to join me in my quest. Did you know that heart rocks are pretty scarce? Yep! You can hunt for hours and never find a really good one. “Don’t be disappointed,” I tell the kids while I rub their dirty little heads and eye their empty pockets, “There is always next time.” In the mean time they have forgotten all about the other magical rocks that surround them. For some reason they don’t hold as much wonder as they used to. Nothing compares to the magic of lost love. Except for a heart with a perfectly round hole in it If you are ever lucky enough to find one like that then hold on to it tight. Or send it to me for my birthday!

P.S. I find that the soil in my various house plants is a lovely place to keep our rock collection. The rocks feel right at home there in a little bit of earth.

Another Member Of Our Rock Family
Does anyone want to name him?

Giving my kids something to collect keeps them from coming home with and entire rock garden in their pockets. It works for me!

How funny! Id' have to convince my hubby of this too, as he collects more rocks than anyone when we are on the beach

I collect heart rocks too! Unfortunately there are tons on our favorite strip of beach in Malibu! But your right, it cuts back on interest in the 100's of other beautiful rocks.

Great idea! Got any thoughts on acorns? Our preschool is called Oak Grove and my older son came home with a new batch in his pockeets every time! Now my 4 year old is going there and it's only a matter of time... Thanks for sharing!

What a great idea! Hopefully this will help me cut down on some of my rock collection too! ;-)

Cute idea, thanks for sharing. What about naming him Squiggy?

I love this idea. My GIRLS are constantly bringing rocks into the house. We have limited it to fossils, but there are still so many that we get quite a few. I like the heart thing. Maybe they will too.

About his name, I suppose Pebbles is too obvious? And Rocky is probably more obvious. :P
Seriously, I was thinking Mr. Squiggles before I read Mira's suggestion of Squiggy. :D

you are a genious. seriously. why didn't I think of that? I just went the mean mommy route and told them they can have one box and anything that doesn't fit in it has to go.

btw, your rock guy is totally cute. ;)

Great ideas!

One thing that helped with our rock problem, however, was my daughter taking up rock carving. Seriously! Seeing your rock and wire man has me thinking that we are definitely going to have to make some of those, too!

Birdie, He was fun to make but it was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. My hands hurt after twisting all that wire! If you have older kids then they might have fun with it. Mine are too little. Make sure you buy wire that doesn't turn your hands black.

My daughter found me a heart rock just the other day. It may even have been on Christmas. She has had a rock fetish lately so I told her that we were going to start a special pile for rocks in the front of the house by the walkway where everyone can see her treasures. So far we haven't had anymore rocks in the house although I did keep the heart rock because it is special.

I looove Cathy's suggestion! But he looks more like a Fred to me.

I collected rocks as a kid. Every time we visited a river or ocean, I'd grab a handful or two, and then pick out the very prettiest. My hubby has a rock polisher and when I dig my old collection out of storage I'm going to shine 'em up!
