Teach Your Kids to Work
Life is messy. Did you know? And the messes are never as easy to clean up as they are to make. Hmmm, I wonder if there is a reason for that? We spend hours cleaning every day so you would think our home would be spotless wouldn't you? I don't want you to be disappointed when you stop by for a visit and see dead bugs sitting on the window sill so I will tell you right now that it is not. Not even close!!!
But we keep working on it and look how much fun we're having! Can you think of anything more fun than doing laundry? How about watching someone else doing laundry?
In case you haven't read enough of my controversial opinions (you can't get enough, can you?) I offer my latest article at GNMParents, It Takes Time.

i looooooooove the washing machine! man, i could wash my entire wardrobe in that!
p.s. i love how she said let's do it again :)
too cute.
I want that laundry helper to come to my house! She's the perfect size for those machines - I have to bend to get the stuff out!
All done! that's adorable!! And I love your "controversial" opinions!
Lara she is adorable!!
Your little "mother's helper" is just TOO sweet!
That's Emma's favourite job as well!
I'm suffering huge laundry machine envy though. Some day...some day... =P
She is such a cutie! And let me guess, that was the Pinks load, right? My 3 year old likes to unload the dryer, too. He'll also put the wet clothes in the dryer, if I hand them to him.
What a valuable and insightful article you wrote! Our society really does tend to say play, play, play and then our kids don't know how to work, cook or clean the house.
I love how your routine works for you. We will have to uncover our own!
And out of curiosity, what chores do all your kids do? It would be fun to see how the "expert" runs things!
Lara, you put into words in your article all the things I've been thinking for the longest time. I'm so glad to find another who feel the same way. Long ago I decided I couldn't live the 'soccer mom' life and just spend it transporting kids here and there all day long. I also didn't like the emphasis being placed on the sport and each child feeling like they and their sport were so important. That sounds bad, but what I mean is, at our house each child gets to do an extracurricular sport/activity on occasion and we all support and watch them, then the next person gets a turn. I didn't want the competition between kids and whose game Mom goes to watch. This way they really see it as a luxury/privilege not as a right to have that extracurricular activity and that we support each other's activities as a family.
I have been thinking about the work issue. We have tried so many things and I think the thing we are lacking is the accountability. Their jobs aren't hard, with 7 kids there are lots of hands to do the work. I think they must think that since they arn't hard they aren't important or worth doing and they just don't do it. What do you do if and when your kids don't do their jobs? I hate to be the white glove that goes behind to see if they've done the work, but I am almost at that point. It seems like the work only gets done if I nag and threaten them......(only with losing prileges, not with anything worse than that) HMMMMM.......maybe that's the problem. Sorry to ramble, but I'm so frustrated right now....Love your blog!
She is *so cute*
Remember my little helper? He gets right into the laundry!
