TV Turn-Off
Turn off is right! I despise television! Head over to Unplug Your Kids and join the challenge. Except that I want you to turn it off and leave it off! If your family is watching television it just may save your lives.
Turning off the T.V. will make you thinner, smarter, richer, and best of all, MORE ORGANIZED!!! That is my promise to you. Just try to prove me wrong!
Go to The Simple Dollar to see how much money you can save by turning off the T.V.
We turned off the T.V. exactly nine years. Stranger agreed before we got married that we wouldn't have T.V. in our home. What can I say? He was love sick! His opinions changed a bit after the wedding however so we continued to let ourselves get sucked into it's evil world for two years until we moved into our last house. Being so strategically placed behind a hill, we couldn't get one fuzzy channel without paying for cable. (Coincidence?) Anyone who knows Bruno the Bargain Slayer will not be surprised that it was a good enough reason for him to start going without.
We had a slight relapse in 2002 when I was stuck at home with two little babies and I thought I couldn't live without watching the Winter Olympics at home if I was going to miss going to miss all of the action. Of course we had to sign up for a whole year. We didn't have to watch it for a whole year but we did. Picture me with unlimited access to HGTV and TLC! That was pretty much a wasted year of my life but brighter things came when our subscription wore out and we didn't renew it. We have been T.V. free ever since.
If you are wondering how I have time to do all the things I do, I'll tell you my secret. I turned off the brain-sucking T.V. and you can do it too!

We've been having some "talking back" issues with our four year old so we shut off the TV about a week ago. He earned it back today and...didn't want to watch it! He had found old toys that were like new, he's been playing outside, reading, drawing, building...Hooray! We all kind of got out of the habit this week. It's been nice.
We turned our tv off last summer and it was fabulous. We have had it again and it is now time to turn it off again. TV is one of those things that has good and bad wrapped around it. I personally never turn it on and most of my children don't either. The two older children are the ones that I have to monitor---so off it goes again!
We were TV free for several years. However, when we moved into our current house, Eaglewood (my husband) decided that he HAD to have access to football and NASCAR again. The fact that his twin brother gave us a rather nice TV didn't help. I AM pleased to report that football and NASCAR have pretty much remained the main uses for the TV, though!
Thanks so much for joining "The TV Turn-Off Week Blog Challenge" that I am trying to put together, and for adding some great links to your post! Hopefully we well get a few more participants, it should be pretty fun. I look forward to reading more!
Neil and I went without TV for four years, but the house we moved into came with basic cable. We didn't bother watching the first few months, but have recently got sucked into a few shows. We keep the TV in the basement so our lives don't revolve around it, but it's starting to get its claws in again.
The tv monster has robbed me of many hours! Putting it in the basement (a non-heated play room) was one of my best ideas. You really have to want to watch when it's 40 degrees inside the basement! A few months ago we restricted tv (including videos) to the weekend only. My hubby set the timer on the vcr to record all the shows he wants to watch and we watch them on the weekend. I was also having mouthy children (though they only watch videos like VeggieTales). Limiting it to the weekends has helped a lot! Now that the weather is finally getting nice they won't want to watch even on the weekends. Yippee!

You are not so weird. Our family watches VERY LITTLE TV. You do have one maybe two. But we really only use it for educational programs on Comcast ON DEMAND. We get to control what comes into our home. Thanks for sharing.
We give up TV every year for lent. Good for you for keeping it off!
Hmmm. TV isn't the problem in my house. It is the computers. I wonder how a "Turn off your computers" challenge would go over in blogland.
YAY!! I'm not the only weird one out there! :o)
We haven't had a tv in our home since before we were married. And, yes it gives you much more time & plus you don't have "junk" pumped into your mind all the time. It's awesome!!
I would never go back!!!!!!!!
I do have to say though, the computer is quite a problem at times. When we got our first computer, my husband took it back about a month afterword & said he didn't want it in our home. It took us awhile but eventually we got another one...I'd love to get rid of it, BUT...well, I'd miss you all too much!! :-D
Glad to hear I'm not alone on that one!
