Organize Your Toys
I already said this.
Are you sick of picking up toys? Then get rid of them and stop buying more! Seriously. Why are you letting them control you and ruin your life?
People just don’t seem to get that kids don’t need a lot of toys. I actually think most parents buy them to make up for their own sad childhood. Toys do not equal love. When my kids were little I started asking myself, “Am I buying this for them or for me?” I think I have finally stopped buying things for myself and pretending they were for my kids. Except for their clothes that is. Those are all for me.

Lol about the clothes. I am SO with you there!
:)
We try to do this too. I have yet to come up with a good way to tell others (grandparents, aunts, friends) not to waste their money on silly toys that will just get thrown out later. Any ideas?
Yeah, how do you tell people not to buy, or how do you respond when asked (this is more from long-distance relatives), "How did they like it?"
It's embarrassing to say, "I only kept one thing out of your box of random stuff, since I opened it first."
Now if only we could do something about the grandparents that insist on bringing something with them every time they come over...uggg.

I love life's little ironies.
Neil is currently playing with the wooden trainset he bought "for Emma". He's been playing for two hours.
Oh, the clothes, the clothes! I only have one (10 months), and already the clothes (and all for me, of course)! We are doing pretty well on toys thus far and have shared our toy philosophy with the grandparents; we'll see whether they listened at the upcoming first birthday.
Oh my word - why don't I know about that blog?
I added her to my google immediately!
Love that post and yours too, Lara.
BTW, I am reading Queen of the Castle right now and also LOVING it!
So true! I have really cut down on the amount of stuff I buy for the kids. It's sometimes hard, because it seems fun to buy something, but then past that moment of fun, it just clutters our house and gets stuck in a closet never to be seen again. *Sigh*
Just wanted to let you know that I purged my kids' room the other day on your inspiration. It's much cleaner now and I'm much happier, as are my boys!
Perhaps all the ladies who are looking for some way to talk to the grandparents can set up a bank account or something and politely ask the grandparents to donate to their kids college/wedding/mission/whatever funds. Most grandparents are willing to forego the toys if there is something to replace it with.
I totally agree with you! I don't buy my children many toys. But did you know those toys procreate as they are sit in the toy box? I'm telling you, they seem to multiply by themselves!!
We don't buy our kids useless toys, either, but watch out when it comes to saying things to relatives. A gift is an expression of love. Their feelings can really be hurt and I have seen this backfire on a friend of mine. She now wonders why her kids don't get much acknowledgemt from their grandparents at all.
This post has me thinking. Thank you.
Suggestion for getting the parents, etc. to stop buying more clutter: ask all of those wonderful well meaning friends and relatives to chip in on a large ticket item that everyone can enjoy. It took 3 years of requests for our family to start doing this, but we were finally able to convince them that a high quality digital video camera was a thing everyone would love since the littles could watch themselves on TV! Next year it is telescope time!
perfect!
Let me know what y'all figure out to tell the grandparents . . . it's a bear! Why do we do this? Maybe we need a rule to get rid of an old toy when a new one moves in :)
