Smart Habit Saturday
If you are new to SHS find out all about it here: Getting Started with SHS. Click here to read more SHS posts. Please don't forget to link back to this post so your readers can find out more about SHS."Thus a new and good habit is born, for when an act becomes easy through constant repetition it becomes a pleasure to perform and if it is a pleasure to perform it is man's nature to perform it often. When I perform it often it becomes a habit and I become its slave and since it is a good habit this is my will."

Have you ever noticed that when you drive somewhere new it seems to take forever but then the return trip is always much faster? Repetition naturally makes tasks easier.
My goal was to work out five days this last week and I am proud to say that I made it three days before I came down with a cold. Hopefully I will get feeling better quickly and I'll get back to the gym next week. If not then I will just take a break.
My habit this week is going to be for my kids (ages 9 and 7). They already help with all the meals and they also have some things they make by themselves like pancakes, muffins, cake, etc., but I want them to learn to make meals by themselves. Victor has made Sloppy Joe's a couple times and we all love it. And Persistence asked me this week if she could start making bread by herself. So my goal is to have the kids each plan, shop for and cook a meal all by themselves once a week.
I don't know why but I feel like it's important for my kids to be as independent as they can. One of my favorite kid movies is Matilda. I love how she studies and learns to do everything for herself. I wish I had been that motivated and independent when I was young so I guess that's why I think the more my kids learn to do things for themselves the better. No matter what happens in their lives, it can't hurt!
I can't wait to find out how everyone is doing on their habits this week. Thanks for joining me!

Here are the other habits I have been working on this year. Some of them are already habits and some of them still need a lot of work but all of them have improved my life. I think my greatest habit of all is my habit of making new habits!
Exercise - 3 days this week, not bad.
Bed/Bath/Laundry - So great!
Using Habit Chart - Loving it!
Using Chap stick - Great! Oh yes. My life has been greatly improved by chap stick people.
Reading scriptures with kids - Good.
Getting to bed early, again - Nadda.
Crafts with kids - Great this week! The kids have been sewing almost every day.
Using Crock Pot - Using it a few times a week.
Paperwork, again, and again - Terrible
Have lunch ready by Noon - Ok
Turn Off Computer during chores - Habit
Become a Dresser - Habit
Playing games with my kids - Not great
Reading my Church Magazine - Habit
Kitchen and studio clutter free - Terrible
Clear Counters - Great
Clear Desk - Need to work on this
Review Planner - Habit
Daily Prayer - I've been forgetting this one lately
Clean Toilet - I have three toilets so I'm doing one every day.

hi there: i saw you on kimberly's site today. i love how you wrote "Inspire not Require!" i had to save it. very good, thanks for sharing, kathleen :)
I hope you feel better soon! I hope I don't get sick these next few days if I stay up late reading a new book :) !!
I can't wait to start teaching my kids to cook and become more independent. First they need to age a few years!
Hope you feel better soon! It's the pits to be the mommy and be sick!
I envy how well you're doing with your habits - perhaps you could work on a few of mine :)
I love independent kids! I'm teaching my oldest to do laundry :)
Do you suppose a smart habit would be to actually remember SHS?? I need to write myself a sticky so I can remember. Sheesh!
I think it's great that you are teaching your kids to take care of themselves. When I was in high school some kids would complain that their mom didn't wake them up so they were late or she didn't wash the shirt they wanted to wear. I thought they were nuts. Though my mom wasn't as thorough with teaching independence as you are I was glad that I knew how to get up, wash laundry and prepare a simple enough meal by the time I was in high school. Thanks for sharing with us, I get some great ideas for my kids - even if most of them are filed away for later.
I think this is where I've been going wrong -- making too long a list of BIG accomplishments. VERY unrealistic for me. I like your idea a lot and am going to give it a try.
Can't count the number of times I have started to exercise only to be derailed by a cold....
I think I am habit-stalking you. You have such great ideas. Way to go on the exercise, hope your cold is over with soon.
I love being able to have children who can plan and prepare meals. It came in very handy after I had Ira. We have now progressed to the point with my two oldest (10 & 11)that they plan all the meals for the week, help with shopping, and do the cooking too!
Thanks for hosting another inspiring week of SMART Habits!
I'm finally back with a habit.
Great habit idea by the way.
That's such a great thing to do. One of my many summer goals was to get the kids cooking. We've made progress on most goals, but on this one, I have totally fallen short. I really want to do this, so maybe next week?
Feel better! Sorry about not commenting in a while--it's been hectic around here. I'm check in for inspiration but haven't had the "organization" to comment. Opps! I will add that to my Habits...
Sorry I'm so late but I didn't want to miss a week.....I will try better next week.........how a great week and good luck with your new habit......hope your feeling better.
