A Life Less Cluttered

This give away is closed and the winner has been notified. Thank you for participating!

Whether we're talking about our homes or our schedules, most of us could live with A Life Less Cluttered and at some point most of us have wondered how, with all our shortcomings and weaknesses, we can make that happen. How do you face those fears? How do you build the kind of character it takes? How do you stay motivated to live the principles you've learned? We can all achieve the uncluttered life we're seeking and my good friend and professional organizer, Christine Rice, the Organizing Muse, is here to teach us how in her new book A Life Less Cluttered; Expert Secrets to Your Own Organizing Epiphany.

Christine sent me a copy of her book and I was happy to read it. So happy that I underlined something on almost every page! I'm sure she won't mind my using it as an outline for my organizing seminars for now on. That's how good it is. It helped me see some things about myself that I didn't even know I knew!

For instance, Christine talks about the labels we use in our lives whether we're labeling containers or people.

"Labels have to be meaningful and accurate in order to be helpful, and "slob'" or your own version of the same, is neither."

Before I first started getting organized nine years ago I probably called myself a slob 20 times a day, every day. It's funny how calling yourself a slob doesn't really help you get yourself more organized! It just makes you despise yourself every time you say it. I finally stopped beating myself up and started giving myself permission to change. Sometimes the old labels you're using don't allow for change, something we should give ourselves, and everyone around us, room to do.

"Becoming better organized is more about creating a new lifestyle than it is about clearing out clutter."

I think we all know that but we don't want to believe it. We want to take a magic pill that changes our life and makes everything easy. This is one of the reasons I don't like organizing shows on television. In what universe can you go into some one's house, get rid of the clutter, organize everything, and expect it to stay that way? It's not happening folks and we all know it so let's stop pretending it is!

Along with getting rid of clutter you have to make changes in your life; changes in the way you shop, the way you schedule your time and the way you handle your things. That is a lot of changing and it doesn't happen over night. It's the reason I started Smart Habit Saturday, a way for me and others to make positive changes in our lives.

If you are looking for your own organizing Epiphany you will enjoy Christine's book. Reading it may just change your life.

Good news! Christine is going to give away a free copy to one of you lucky Organizers out there. Just leave a comment telling me at least one positive label that you are going to start using to replace an old ineffective label. I'll go first...

I am efficient! I'm not a slob, I just like to keep busy and busy tends to get messy. I know if I slow down I can stay organized and work more efficiently.

I'll leave the comments open until some time on Sunday. I will notify you if you are the winner (make sure you leave me with a valid e-mail address) and Christine will mail you a book!

Keep checking back because I have more books to give away and also some fabulous Organizing Bags. You can't wait, can you???

I am going to start telling myself that I am a neat and tidy person and stop telling myself that I am messy. I know I can keep things nice if I put forth a little effort every day! :o)

Wow, that sounds like a great book... I'll definately have to read it.

Well for me, the biggest label I have when it comes to organizing is "I am NOT my mom" and that seriously motivates me to organize! I know I have a knack to be an organized person but I have hindered that process by not trying out my ideas or waiting for "the perfect thing" to organize with (eg. a perfect bookshelf, a perfect container) I'm now starting to get over that and starting to get organized NOW and if the perfect thing comes along later, great! if not, at least i'm organized for the time being. :)

The book sounds great! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

My biggest negative label would be that "I'll do it when I have more time." And I never do. I often feel like if I can't get something done perfectly, then I just won't do it, or even attempt to start it. Needless to say...not a lot gets done. "I think I will try to change that to I'll do the best I can with the time I have." It has got to better than it is right now!

That book sounds great...wonder if she wants another reviewer :)

Do you know I honestly can't think of a negative label I use except maybe that I'm a Freak but that one I like!!!

Mine would be, I am not lazy or a procrastinator. I am efficient and am very good at prioritizing.

I have recently found your site and it is so important for me to change my labels. Would love to have a copy of that book!
Thanks
Marie

The book sounds interesting & helpful.

Words, esp ones we call ourselves, can make an impact in our lives - pos or neg. I will no longer call myself, or my home a mess (which has been my label for a few months now), no I am not a mess - myself and my home are a work in progress & progress is being made!

I would love the book.
I need to be better at putting things back where they go, and do a little bit of cleaning and organizing everyday. A little bit everyday is easier than waiting until it is too overwhelming to tackle!

What if I call myself a dork all the time because I really am one? Right. I'll try to come up with a better label. Like maybe Queen of the Dorks.

Congratulations on the baby news! I'm so happy/sorry for you and your potential joy/months of suffering. Four is a good number.

I LOVE to organize, and I get to do this quite often through some of my work as a Home Support person. Trust me, I get to see some seriously out of control places! My own home is pretty organized, but I always find room for improvement. My downfall is paperwork, and because I'm more of an artistic type, I've never liked filing or office type work. I've always said I would rather clean a toilet than deal with paperwork, and I've convinced myself that it's just one of my personality traits that will never change. I've called myself various things, one of them being "a screw up" when it comes to paperwork. (Bills, library fines, income tax, etc.) It only occurred to me very recently that I could be organized in this department and I may actually find it fun rather than scary! So far, I've started by saving all of my receipts, so I know where I'm spending my money and I can actually take a look at my finances! How revolutionary! I'm tired of feeling anxious and fearful when it comes to any paper work. It can't be that insurmountable! So, I'm going to begin to call myself "Capable". See, I already feel better about myself.

PS, I've just discovered your blog/journal and I love it! Trust me, I've been reading all of your archives this past week, and I'm up to Aug 06!

The book looks like a winner, I want to go out and buy it today, (and file the receipt).

I would quit telling myself how "behind" I am and say that I'm right where I need to be, doing as much as I can with my time. Also, I have been using the word "overwhelmed" WAY too often. I am not overwhelmed - I am busy doing the things that need to get done, even if they are not on my schedule for that day. Can you tell I'm not very spontaneous? I am a list maker and love being organized. I've just allowed things to get slightly behind - but I'm catching up!

With three kids under five, I'm always apologizing for being "scattered." That's not too empowering. I think I'll stop apologizing and start considering myself an efficient multi-tasker!

Hmm... I usually don't label myself at all at least about organization and cleaning. I think I'm afraid to think about it!

Really need to think about the labels I use. I do love my label maker that's for sure.

I'll start by calling my "junk" excess things to donate others to give them joy.

I just need to keep it simple! Instead of saying that I am not a good housekeeper, I need to focus on the positive. We are BUSY and ACTIVE!

I tell myself all kinds of negative things. If my friends called me what I call myself, then I wouldn't really have any friends. I need to get out from under the clutter. It sounds like a good one to read. Thanks for the recommendation.
