When In Doubt, Just Buy the Costume

My kids have been begging me to make their Halloween costumes since... last Halloween. Have yours? Of course I kept telling them that we would make them when it got closer but being pregnant and sick has kind of put a kink in our plans. That's what I get for procrastinating.

My kids were very nice about it and said they would wear a costume that we already had but I have been feeling guilty for years about the fact that I've never made Persistence a princess costume for dress up. She has never wanted to be a princess or anything "pretty" for Halloween. She's the type that would rather be a scary witch or a dead person. This year she finally said she wanted to be a princess so I feel I must make her a beautiful dress. Must. Make. Dress.

You don't know what a feat it was for me to drag us to the fabric store and then spend time picking out a pattern and fabric. We came home with the pictured treats (see the sparkles?)which cost so much money that I'm embarrassed to even tell you what I spent. Even though it was all on sale, if I had done any figuring in my head before the fabric was cut we would have left the store immediately, driven to a bridal shop and picked out the most expensive flower girl dress we could buy. Ok, maybe it wasn't that bad but close.

It had better not be hideously ugly when it's done, that's all I can say. And she had better not grow for the next five years so we can get our money's worth. We did come up with a brilliant idea though that she can wear the same dress to the family ball we're going to next March.

I just want to say one more thing. If you're going to leave your horse out in the rain I think it's very nice to leave an umbrella for it to stand under. Don't you? I don't know why but this cracked me up so much that I had to turn around and take a picture of it. I guess you had to be there.

I love the picture. Token gesture, I'd say!

I've done the same thing before--thinking I was saving money somehow by making something myself, but in the end spending way more in time and money to make the dumb thing! Hope it turns out cute. I'm assuming you'll post pictures when it's done!

I'm sure when it's all over she'll feel and look like the most beautiful princess. And even though it'll be a nightmare until it's over, she'll always remember and love the princess costume mommy made! (let's hope at least!) And isn't it sad that things generally are cheaper to buy made than to make it yourself! Not everything, but in the fabric area it tends to be that way.

I feel the same way you do about Halloween costumes. I. HATE. MAKING. THEM. I love to sew. I will sew anything. I have yet to finish making the perfect Halloween costume. This year, the only thing my 9-year-old wanted was a yellow skirt. Simple, right? I talked her into wearing a black skirt she already has and bought her a shirt. I learned that I usually spend about $9,003,498 on the materials to make constumes (that never get made), so it is easier for me to either (a) buy it or (b) buy it.
Good luck with your sewing. I, too, would love to see pictures.

Also, the horse? Too funny.

The only thing I've ever sewed is a mishaped bean bag. You've got me beat. Emma's costume is a $10 garage sale special. =P

Must be nice to be able to sew. I've always wanted to learn!

The horse pic is hilarious. The horse sure looks embarrassed. "Don't take a picture, please don't take a picture, oh no, she's taking the picture, how embarrassing!"

lol

Love the horse.
And our giraffe costumes came from ebay so I am completely impressed.

Funny picture! I thought he looked embarrassed, too.

Good luck with the costume, I'm sure it will be beautiful. My kids have scrounged around and come up with costumes. The last couple of years I have not been motivated enough to make them. The boys just want to be super heroes anyway.

Does the horse's head melt in water?
