The kids did pretty well making their beds this week. The first night I had a chat with the kids. I thanked them for all of their help during this pregnancy and I told them I wanted them to start making their beds in the morning without me reminding them to do it. They both agreed they would. Then I broke the news that if they didn't there would be consequences.
The next morning both of their beds were made! I was so happy that I asked them how they had remembered to do it. My daughter said, "I just got up and made mine because I was scared about what the consequences would be!" Isn't that fabulous? She won't make it out of love and respect for her mother but she will make it to avoid imaginary consequences. Then my son said proudly, "I didn't make my bed! I just slept on top of the covers!"
Apparently I have done a very good job raising these kids.
Daily vacuuming has been my job for the last year because for some reason I can't seem to force or bribe my kids into doing. They will do everything else but they will not vacuum. Oh, they will pretend to vacuum but they won't actually be getting the floors clean. My husband has vacuumed the kitchen a few times in the last couple months but that's about it so you can imagine what our floors look like. I felt pretty good yesterday morning so I straightened up my bed/bath/laundry rooms and vacuumed the floors. Yay!
My new goal is to vacuum the house or at least one area of the house every day. I'm really pushing myself here but I think I can do it and live to tell about it. I have to tell you one more thing about vacuuming. Long, long ago back in my pre-organizing days I was teasing my sister-in-law about being a neat freak. "No I'm not," she tried to defend herself, "I mean, sometimes I don't even vacuum every single day." I burst out laughing. The thought of vacuuming even a couple times a week was hilarious to me and my house looked like it.
Now you can make fun of me all you want but I normally try to vacuum my house every day. With our wood floors it's easy to do and we are really big slobs so it needs it. And if I have ever teased you for having clean floors will you please forgive me?

I actually find vacuuming to be very therapeutic :) !! And you can make fun of me if you want too ...
Get a Roomba. Seriously. I thought my husband was nuts when he wanted one but I gave in. I absolutely love it! The best part? My husband gets a kick out of it (it's the geeky guy in him)so he'll run it daily for me. And if you get the Scooba it'll mop your floor too.
Seriously.
What a good habit. I am totally out of that habit since both of my kids are totally terrified and literally run screaming from the vaccuum!
Meanwhile, I'm trying to link to you and the link to your post isn't working. Darned if I'd know how to fix it if it were my issue but you seem way more on top of these things than I am so I thought yo might know what to do!
I laughed when you said that your son said he slept on top of the covers - I did that too! Not all the time but esp in the summers I'd sleep on top & use an extra blanket to cover up with. Just to avoid making my bed, it's still the hardest 'chore' for me to get in habit of doing, I've never cared much either way if it was made. I also slept on top of the covers when I was pregnant with my son but that was only because it was too darn hot to get underneath them.
No teasing for vacuuming each day from me. I have all hard surface floors (lino & grocery store tile) and I sweep at least once a day, sometimes more if the kids walked around with food. I am usually barefoot in the house and can't stand feeling the crumbs on my feet.
Have a great week!
Congrats on getting your kids to make their beds..........whatever works for them works for you right! My kids use to be terrifed of the vaccum so it was so hard to fit it in now they love it and ask me if I am going to vaccum (as it is a big game to run up to the vaccum and then run away screaming) so I have no excuses now........make sure you rest too, you are pregnant (and what better reason will you ever have!!!).......have a great week
Put me in the vacuum every day camp. With a very small house and lots o'people it just has to be done daily. Can't wait to finish our addition so the table won't be right next to the living room where food is easily tracked on to the carpet. Glad you're feeling able to do some things.
I'm wishing for a Roomba... with a dog and a cat, vacuuming often is a must (and it doesn't get done as often as it should).
