Talk About Tuesday

I don't do a lot of decorating for Christmas. I have a Christmas tree that I put up every year and that's about it. Because I'm selfish and I don't like to share, the kids each have their own little trees that they can decorate and re-decorate to their heart's desire. They can drag them around or play house with the little ornaments and I don't care. Aren't I a fun mom?
If you don't already do this with your kids then you must start. Just wait till after December 25th and pick up some little trees, short strings of lights and boxes of tiny ornaments for next to nothing. Craft stores are a great place to look.

I have sets of ornaments I've collected over the years and every year or so I make a new set of ornaments. I've always thought they were adorable until this year. Last week when I pulled them out of the box just looking at how ugly they were made me sick to my stomach so I don't think my tree will have anything but lights on it this year. Hopefully I will go back to liking them again next year when I'm not sick and pregnant or I will have to start over with the deocrations and that doesn't sound fun.

Normally I can't wait to get Christmas cleaned up so I just dump everything in a box but last year I got crazy and organized all of it. I didn't lose as many snowmen noses as I usually do. Doesn't it look pretty? Not the ornaments but the organization of it?
I only have two boxes of Christmas things. I bought the red containers a couple years ago, once again, on sale after Christmas so it's not hard to find them when it's time to decorate.
Oh, and I also collect ornaments for my kids. Persistence gets a different angel each year, Victor gets a star and Lovely, of course, gets a heart ornament. What's it going to be for this next baby? It has to be something that's easy to find but something more generic than Santa or snowmen. Maybe it will have to be snowflakes if it's a girl. What would work for a boy?
Who else has their tree up already? I can't wait to see photos!
Oh, and as if I don't already have enough carivals going on here, this Works For Me!

Ornament themes for the kids ... I like that idea. Now we just need to put a real tree up :) We haven't put one up the last couple of years because we have been out of town for extended periods.
How about trains or trees?
I love the organization of your ornaments, and the ornaments are very nice (I'm sure you will love them again next year).
You could make popcorn or cranberry garlands.
Your comment about your ornaments being ugly reminds me of being pregnant... what an interesting time of your life that is. :) For the record, I think they're cute. I might have to organize mine this year but they're such a hodgepodge, I'd have 85 different little bags.
I love the kids' trees idea and the different ornament themes. I wish I'd thought of this back when my oldest was little. :)
I collect ornaments for my kids but they are different each year. The theme idea is cute and I like the train idea if the baby is a boy. I should go through my Christmas stuff this year but since I'm gone for the holidays I'll likely wait until next.
I put my tree up yesterday just so I would have it to talk about today!
Snowflakes are a good idea for a boy or a girl, I think. I guess the train is a good option as well.
I love the idea of letting them have their own tree to do whatever they want with. Does it help keep them away from the "real" tree?
I have a different tree for the kids too. And no we haven't decorated yet.
We've always had one tree and it's never been fancy. The kids have figured out that their yarn ornaments go in the back, though. :)
But this year my hubby is pushing for two trees. I just don't have the energy to start that. I think I will look after Christmas and try to buy from the bargains available then.
Also, we decided we didn't like our country angel tree topper this year (it would be good for the kid's tree). But I can't find something I like and so far the tree it "topless"! I need ideas!
I think your ornaments and storage are wonderful!
We do new ornaments every year from the kids, too. They get to pick out their own and Santa brings them a new one for their stocking.
Speaking of stockings...how about a stocking if it's a boy.
Well, my first thought was that your ornaments are so cute! (then you went and called them ugly!)
I don't have my tree up yet, but we were talking about doing that this weekend, we usually put it up on the first weekend of December, but due to a certain pup I don't know! (Read my blog to see what she did today!)
The theme in our house at Christmas time is Snowmen and Bears (we have the bear theme all year round. And I mean teddy bear or animal, not the sports teams)
oh and angels, can't forget the angels.
We have a tree just for the kids too. It makes us all happy because the kids can display all of their ornaments, some of which include Spiderman, Hello Kitty and Strawberry Shortcake and I can have my tree all to myself! :)
I am nowhere close to putting up my tree. Since I will be out of town this Xmas, I also have several tiny trees that I can put up just to be Christmessy!
I love your theme ornament idea! I buy or make 3 ornaments for my hubby and two boys every year. My boys also get ornaments from grandparents, so I hope to have a huge set to give each of the boys when they have their own homes. I bought each of the boys a 2 foot tree to put in their rooms, but we just store them with the lights and decorations on them. Your way sounds like WAY more fun for them! Thanks for sharing!
I love the idea of little trees for the kids. We had trees in every room when I was growing up (even the bathroom!). What about drum ornaments if it is a boy? Or nutcrackers? There seems to be a lot of both around.
One man's trash...I think your ornaments are fabulous! My son has a tree in his room with all the Star Wars ornaments my husband has collected over many, many years of geekhood. He used to insist they go on the main tree, but once our son was born I had an excuse to "hide" them away!
We do snowflakes for boys and girls in our family. Once they are old enough they just look great on the tree. Another gender-neutral is "12 Days of Christmas" theme. But my boy would like the trains best!
And I do think you'll like your ornaments again next year. Good luck!
I like gingerbread men (and have enough ornaments, books, cookie cutters and such for several homes!) For our grandchildren, the themes are tin soldiers (sometimes nutcrackers if we can't find a soldier), snowmen, angels, and a new one yet to be decided. I might go with the snowflake idea. Thanks.
Excellent ideas, as always!!
Your organization of the ornaments looks great! I might have to try that this year. I also like the idea of getting each kid an ornament every year. I'm going to start this year.
I also disliked many things when I was pregnant, but happily I like them again.
We don't put the tree up untill after Sinterklaas. That's 6 december.
Have a great week!
I organized mine last year, too. Great idea on getting them a small tree of their own. :)
My WFMW is up at http://adashofsassitude.blogspot.com/
It's a gift wrapping tradition that started when I was pregnant Christmas 2005. :)
wow! love the organization ... i just may have to do that, but most of mine are breakable ... hmmmm.
any ideas on keeping a 9.5 month old from trying to pull up on a tree and pulling it down on top of him -- because i know the minute i set up the tree it will be going down! ahhhh
I can't commit to a theme, but I do buy my very-close-in-age (so there needs to be two of everything) daughters the same type of ornament each year in two different colors/styles. One year bears, one year jinglebells, one year stars, one year Texana. Our tree is, needless to say, not very matchy.
@Jodi Jean: Tie a length of wire around the tree trunk, and attach it firmly to a drywall anchor in the wall - much like you would a bookshelf. Then it won't topple over.
I have a new kitten this year and he's threatening to topple ours over too.
I think your ornaments are mega cute. Now that I'm all grown up, my mum and I have started exchanging one really nice ornament every year. It means that our trees are not as coordinated as they could be, but at least everything on it has pleasant associations, and then I just whack on some lights.
Works for me!
