Buy Me Stuff!

Yesterday Persistence turned 8. Happy Birthday! She didn't NEED anything so we didn't buy her anything. Instead I took her shopping. How ironic is that? First we went to get her hair cut and then we went to dinner and then shopping. She actually does need a new dress to wear to Church but we never found anything.

Instead she picked out a pair of shoes that were on sale for $5, 8 little mini bread pans because she loves to cook, and a scarf and hat for a couple dollars because she doesn't have any and she does go out to play in the snow every day. My prediction though is that they will be lost in the snow or trampled to death in the garage within a week.

She had a fabulous time. When we were at dinner she said, "How come Victor didn't get a fancy birthday like this?"

When we were out we saw this...

If you're going to raise a proper American consumer it's important to start the brainwashing as soon as possible. Laurie left me a comment the other day:

I do wonder, seriously, what would happen to our economy if we all cut back and
didn't spend. I'm on the bandwagon for no spending. But after 911 what did they
encourage everyone to do but go out and shop!

I'm betting that if everyone cut back even 20% of their spending it would have serious repercussions on our economy. I'm not worried about that though because it's not going to happen. America is a country full of addicts (television, shopping, food, s*x, smoking, drugs and alcohol, etc.) and they're here to stay.

Did I ever tell you what I saw at Walmart one day? A package of little girl's panties that said, "Sweet and innocent...for now!" Just thinking about them makes me feel sick to my stomach all over again. I can't imagine any mother buying something so disgusting for her four year old but apparently they do.

Speaking of addicts I'm going to go out on a limb and announce to everyone that I am off sugar. Again! Of course today is my first day but still...

How long do you think I can make it this time or will I finally conquer the beast? I'm writing about it at Eatopia.

You know why I come here, Lara? Because you inspire me. Thank you for that.

I love how I feel when I don't eat sugar. Thanks for the inspiration. I have been feeling so much better with this pregnancy, EXCEPT when I eat sugar. hmmm... you'd think that would be enough motivation to stop me from eating sugar.

Wow. I thought the shirt was bad enough but those panties - that is just SICK!!!
Glad your daughter had a great birthday. Best of luck with going sugar free. I tried it a few years back and lasted just a few short days. Will try again one day.

The girls' panties is just SICK! Makes me shudder to think about it.

Happy Birthday to the Birthday Girl!

I have done the no sugar thing before and I didn't die, but now it somehow feels even harder to attempt it. Probably a sure sign that it is just what I need.

I can't believe the stuff that parents put on their kids!

Anyway, the sugar thing is great! You've renewed my enthusiasm. Here is a list that will help remind you why your doing this:

I love this idea, as I clear out my own clutter I am aware that I really could cut back 20% Great idea! Good luck on the sugar, another great idea!

I was shocked at what those panties said. I don't understand how people can't figure out where our kids' innocence has gone and yet they still buy that kind of stuff. Well, I hope they don't actually.

I HAD to comment on the little girls panties...that is just SICKO. I cannot believe that. Who would buy that kind of disgusting crap!!!

Go you on the sugar deal. You are a better person than I!

The sweet & innocent comment would be bad enough on a t-shirt, I'm thinking attitude wise here but on underwear for a 4 year old, that is disgusting! Some perv probably got a kick out of that one.

The 'buy me stuff' shirt is annoying as well. Us parents should have a shirt that says "get a job, pick up after yourself, do the dishes" something like that in response. Nowadays kids just expect things to be given to them without doing anything for it. I'm sick of parents being the 'friend' and not the parent, it's called tough love folks. Sorry, end of rant.

Anne, thanks for the list. Plenty of reasons to stop eating sugar aren't there! E-mail me and I'll help you with linking.

Hey Laura!

I sat beside you at the seminar last night, if you remember, the one who is starting home schooling next month! I thought I'd come check out your website and I love it. I am also, coincidentally, off sugar... two days so far. Guh!

I really like your ideas on being not-such-a-consumer. I personally am overwhelmed with my stuff. I'm beginning to think I should be a nomad who only owns a tent and a blanket, so at least I'd have a chance to keep organized.

I have my own blog, in fact have been blogging for years with my own website for my artwork (linked with my name). It's my -only!- hobby, which makes it all the more precious. I was totally with you when you said it's something you need! If I don't have my "thing" to do with my spare time, I go nuts.

I've just realized I'm going to have to completely give up TV to continue my hobby, which is hard because The Husband loves his TV time (and me to join him in it). If you have any tips on convincing The Husband that giving up TV is really a good thing, I'd love to know.

I've got a modestly decent readership on my site, so I'll link you when I update on Friday and maybe you'll pick up some new readers!

I love your blog! Every time I come here you inspire me and make me laugh. I've often struggled with the messages on t-shirts and such. I recently saw one on a pre-teen that said "You look like my future ex-boyfriend." Anyway, thanks for all your sharing. Have a wonderful day, Penny

What a great birthday idea. All the gifts my kids get (from grandparents) makes me ill.
I agree there are a lot of yucky sayings on things and I wonder who really buys them?
And your baby counter thing freaks me out since I'm due just before you. That's not enough time!

Gosh, a shopping trip with Mom sounds like the best bday gift ever! Sounds like you had fun.
I'm not happy with Walmart at all right now and you have given me even more reason! Check out this:

As for the impact on the economy of our not being shopaholics, there are some other views you might agree with:

I so totally hear you! I gave up sugar on Wednesday. Thursday I couldn't do it and today I lasted until 11:30. I know, I know, I'm not very good at it, but I'm trying. And I've also cut back on the shopping for this month. No Target, No Kohl's, no online busy just because they were a screaming deal. I'm trying to get my spending and my budget under control.

Maybe for every week that you eschew sugar you could buy yourself some stuff? (Just kidding! Sort of.)

I just came across your blog from a link on one of blogger's "blogs of note."

This post really resonated with me. I've been thinking lately that I'm a terrible consumer because I don't buy a lot of stuff. I love to look and pass things up.

I'm glad I found you here and all these great resources.

Over consumption should also be a disease equal to gambling, drinking, sex addiction...and featured on shows like intervention. There was a woman on Oprah recently who unloaded 2 semis of merchanside out of her home.
