Food Storage Anyone?

I told you I was going to work on getting our food storage organized this year. I didn't lie. Sometimes I lie but this time I didn't.

I sent Stranger on a little errand this week to buy 144-5 gallon buckets. Yes that's right. 144! Well if you're going to store 3,000 pounds of food then it takes a lot of buckets! How do people afford this?

Now I'm just trying to figure out who's going to wash all those buckets.

What's the deal with all these buckets?

One Step at a Time!

We are actually eating through our food storage at the moment, getting ready to live internationally (where we'll start building it again!)

If find that by keeping a list of what I still need in my food storage, helps me to remember to pick up an extra $20-$30 dollars worth of food storage each time I shop! Its the slow way, but it works!

Isn't that why you had the little darlings?

As soon as it warms up, I sense a bucket-thon in the works.

Oh. My. Suddenly my three shelves of various food products in the garage seems soooo inadequate. =P

That is a lot of buckets. Did you get a good price buying the entire skid?

What are you starting with first?
Wheat?

I am on this same thought process. However, I haven't actually put it down on the paper to know I actually need 144 buckets!

Can I borrow your apron pattern?
Where do you get your cute fabric?

Oh my heavens what do you do with that many buckets? Inquiring minds need to know!

Where'd you get that many buckets?!?

Good luck on your food storage. I've been working on it slowly, but surely myself.

Wow, those are a lot of buckets! I have stored most of mine dry packed from the cannery unless it is stuff I use then it is in 25 lb buckets.

How about one bucket a week? Take it outside, fill it w/soapy water & let the kids help you wash the car & the bucket at same time?

They will probably not think it's as fun by the 3rd week ;)

WOW!
Where do you buy all of your food from?

WOW!
I am wondering where you're going to store all those buckets.

I was thinking the same thing as Veggiemom - have a daily, weekly, etc. appointment with a new bucket.

Do you already have all the food to fill those? That's what I'm amazed at.

Hey that si great. I'm sure you know about them but the gamma seal lids, they are screw on lids for these 5 gallon buckets are amazing! Make it a ton easier for kids to get on nad off. Enjoy this fun!

I'd like to know where you purchased all the buckets as well! Not that we'd be able to get any here in the boondocks but if we ever venture out to a bigger town it'd be nice to plan for.

I agree with everyone else. Where are you going to store all that? I talked to the Kitchen Kneads guy and he said you can leave wheat in the brown bags. He suggested putting them in rubbermaid tubs or something to protect them.

Sounds like you have a plan! That's awesome. We're working on our plan. We stored stuff here and there, but it really needs to be gone through and figured out what we have and what we need.

Good Luck!

To clean, I would take them outside, maybe 20 at a time and put a dot of dish soap in all of them and spray them with the hose, that will get them all sudsy and have the kids do a quick wipe inside the buckets and then it's time for the rinse. Rinse well and let them dry in the sun.

Again, I would like to know if you got a good deal and where did you get so many?

WOW!

First of all, where did you get containers in BULK like that??!!

Secondly, how do you get your husband to follow organizing rules in your house? I have been harrassing my husband about putting things in proper spots in the pantry and most of the time he does ok but he still refuses about a few items. As for other organization stuff around the house, he just won't compromise with any ideas or will agree on an idea but never follow it... help?!

So curious about what you're going to put in the buckets! And where you'll keep 'em!

I thought I was drowning when we bought our buckets 9 years ago. But I'm so happy we made the investment. It is so worth it. Now to find more wheat and rice that won't break my bank. I'm not LDS, so I may have to tag along with a friend since food prices have risen so much. Keep telling us about your storage.
Oh, do you need a WW bread recipe? I've got a winner. No fail. Promise.
