Smart Habit Saturday

Welcome! If you are new to SHS find out all about it here: Getting Started with SHS. Click here to read more SHS posts. Please don't forget to link back to this post so your readers can find out more about SHS.

I love my new laundry habit! I used to do all the laundry one day a week. This was actually working really well for me. Persistence and I gathered up all the laundry, got it washed, dried, folded, I ironed the few things that needed it and she put everything away. All done.

But my dream is to hang all the clothes to dry to save electricity. I don't know what difference it will actually make in our monthly bill but it just seems so environmentally friendly that I can't help myself. Anything that makes more work has to be fun right? Except maybe not when you're ten. Victor didn't enjoy my new plan yesterday when he had to hang up all his laundry.

So every day this week we have washed a load and hung it to dry. The next day I fold the last load and hang up a new load. I actually look forward to it! I have to put a few things in the dryer for a minute to tumble the wrinkles out but it has worked really well and I get to have all those warm fuzzies of simple living.

WOW! That's so awesome that it's working for you! I think it's great that you are saving electricity and really enjoying it! Way to go, good luck with it this week!

I think that you are crazy! I just can't bring myself to cause myself any more work! I actually hang LOTS of our clothes because I don't want them to shrink. Adding all the rest would put me over the edge to insanity!

Do you know how to put a graph on my blog?

I really need to get to the point where I even think about being more green! At this point I'm just trying to get back to where I was pre-baby (#4)! You are amazing with your laundry habit! Good one!

Glad it's working well for you. I don't think I could do it, at least not regularly. And around here it often rains without any warning so that would set me back in progress. Have a great week!

That's great that it's working for you. But I totally understand Victor's reaction, LOL! My mom used to hang the clothes out to dry in the warmer months and it was always my job to go out and take them off thel ine in the backyard.

Nothing like being 10 or 11 and taking your dad's underwear and mom's bras off the line for the world to see...

I do this, too! We have a clothesline in our backyard for the summer months, but since it is winter 10 months out of the year here, we hung some very strong closet rods in our laundry room, stuck hangers all over them, then hang laundry on them to dry. I can get four times as many clothes onto the closet rod as I used to get onto my fold-out drying rack! I don't iron as much now, too! :)

I love this! In the summer, I hang lots of stuff to dry and I actually find it to be a "fun chore". I'm still having trouble finding places to hang things indoors in the winter. I have a question though. Do you hang everything to dry or just some things? I hang anything that will have to be ironed anyway, underwear and socks, bedding and some other clothes. I don't like to hang jeans or towels because they dry so stiff and they look and feel gross. Any suggestions? mhodgson72@hotmail.com

For hanging clothes to dry (or when getting the laundry in the firt place), my husband installed two wire hangers that push back up into the wall that you can hang about 8 -12 hangers with clothes on (not dripping wet though...too heavy). I also have a collapsable drying rack that you can hang things over the many different bars that make it up. Or you can lay flat a couple of items to dry.

I hang dry some of my clothes. Just in the laundry room though, not outside. I worry about colors fading if I hang it outside. I do have to iron more often though in order to get rid of the stiff feeling they get from being hung dry.

Good on you! And the best part is the clothes and bedding smells SO good after hanging in the sun & breeze. I grew up with line-dried clothes, and did it myself for a while when my dryer broke (pre-babies). Call me crazy but I found it meditative to hang them - something about the repetitiveness. Now with two preschoolers, there's no way I'd have the time or patience though!
