Wonderful Opportunities for Raising Responsible Kids

This contest is closed. The winner of the book was Christine Rockwell. Congratulations Christine!
Opportunity is missed by most of us because it is dressed in coveralls and looks like work.
Thomas Edison
Our homeschool group invited Debbie Bowen to speak at one of our sharing nights for Mom's several months ago. She wrote a book called W.O.R.K., Wonderful Opportunities for Raising Responsible Kids. I made sure I went because teaching my kids to work around the house has been one of my big projects these last two years. It took about a year to really get into the swing of things and I learned a lot along the way, a lot of things I would have already known if I had just read Debbie's book first!!!

To save yourself the trouble of figuring it out the hard way like I did, pick up a copy of Debbie's book right now. Immediately! I wrote a few articles on the subject but her book goes more in depth and answers a lot of questions you might have as you go along.

Debbie is the Mother of ten so she has many years of experience in teaching children. She understands that it takes a family, not just a Mother, to run a household.

As the parent, you are not a soloist but rather the conductor of your own home
orchestra. You need not, in fact, you should not try to do all the work
yourself.
No matter what ages your children are it's never too late, or too early, to start teaching them capability, dependability, and responsibility and Debbie can show you where to start. She says delegation is the key to your sanity and she will lead you step by step through the process.

If you aren't already teaching your children to work you probably have many excuses including,

  • I can do it faster myself.

  • If I want it done right I have to do it myself.

  • I find the work enjoyable.

  • I'm a creature of habit.

  • I'm not organized enough.

  • I feel sorry for them.

  • My children aren't capable.

  • My children are too busy.

  • My children complain.

  • My children refuse to work.

  • They're too old to change.

  • My children expect to get paid.
Debbie answers all these concerns and more. I wish I had been given this book the day my first baby was born. It would have saved me a lot of trouble. First I had to learn that it wasn't my job to do everything for my children. That took about five years. And then I had to figure out how to teach them to do things for themselves. That has taken another three years. It's been a long road but I know from my experience that it's possible. People often ask me how I have time to do all the things I do. To me it doesn't seem like I do much but even so I couldn't do half of it without my children's help. I'm finding out that they are my greatest asset so I think I'll keep them around!

To win a free copy of Debbie Bowens book, W.O.R.K., leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite and least favorite household chores are. Make sure you also leave contact information through your blog or e-mail so you don't miss out on your opportunity to win.

I'm trying to think if I have such a thing as a "favorite" chore. I actually don't care for any of it. I guess I don't mind washing laundry as much as some other things. My most hated chore would have to be cleaning the bathrooms, but doing dishes is right up there, too!

At February 18, 2008, Blogger Frantic Home Cook said...

Ah...fave chore, cooking. Hence my blog. But least fave? Must I limit it to one? Ah well, I MUST, I suppose that would be changing the kitty litter...No WAIT! Cleaning the toilet...NO, um. Cleaning the dog's mess in the backyard. (I think I sense a theme here.) Ok, so anything doo-doo related (I'm trying to use family language here.)

I hate doing dishes so that is something that I worked out with my husband before we were married. I don't know if this is a chore, but I like unpacking. I guess I also don't mind laundry---as long as it doesn't have to be put away right then!

My least favorite household chore is definitely doing dishes by hand. I am so thankful that we have a dishwasher! I'd be in BIG trouble if we didn't. I'm not sure I have a favorite chore... hmmm... maybe the one I dislike the least is laundry. I don't mind throwing the clothes into those machines too much. It's the folding and putting away that slows me down some days. ;o) I would love to read a book about teaching my kiddos to help around the house. They're still little, but I know they could help in some areas if I only knew how to motivate them!

Favorite chore would be dishes, I'd do dishes over laundry or cooking any day. Laundry isn't hard but such a long process and I don't enjoy it. Cooking, well I don't feel confident in the kitchen and get frustrated with all of the planning it often requires.

Sounds like a great book! Thanks!

I hate cleaning toilets, but have done much better with your idea of cleaning it daily before I jump in the shower!

I LOVE doing laundry. I know; wierd. Sorting, washing, love it.

Dishes, not so much. I recently have been getting better at assigning things like that to the kiddos. No, not as slaves, but if the 8 yr old empties the dishwasher before school, I find it much easier to load up the dirty ones all day long.

I HATE HATE HATE putting away all of my piles of crap. I have a lot of them. Why don't the piles of crap fairies visit my house? Oh, and cleaning out my fridge.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE wiping down the counters. It means the piles of crap are gone.

And vacuuming. It means everything else is done!

I despise doing laundry...and dishes. Can I pick 2? I have no problem putting the wash in the washer and dryer, but the folding is a whole other matter. Same with dishes. I have no problem putting them in the dishwasher/washing them, but I don't like putting them away.

I LOVE washing down counters, windows, any type of surface that requires Windex. LOVE it! Strange, I know. :)

I looked through the post first, and I was going to put down my fave chore as dishes, because it doesn't take long and makes a huge difference to the kitchen. But seeing as some people consider cooking a chore, I changed my mind and my fave is cooking!

My least fave is sweeping (what nonhicks call vacuuming)! I dunno why. I just hate it. Although I believe it may have more to do with the picking up before-hand than the actual sweeping...

It is good to know that I am not the only mom who would not have a clean house if it weren't for the kids. (They make all the messes anyway!!) ;)

I just recently found your blog and I love it! Thanks for all the great ideas!

My least favorite chore is pretty much all of them but if I have to pick, I don't like to cook. So much prep time to get things ready. Too much opportunity to burn things and ruin the whole meal. And, the beautiful creation is gone after your family demolishes it...only to be left with a big o' mess of dishes to clean up. Hate it!

My favorite is collecting and taking out the trash. Love to see it leave my home!

Oh my goodness I need to read this book. I think my kids have learned that if I ask them to do something, they can either ignore me and I'll just eventually do it myself, or I'll blow up and scream at them to do it. Maybe they are taking their chances hoping for the first outcome. I don't like to clean the bathroom, and I like to clean the floor.

Wow that looks like a great book. I have a problem with the way I like things done. A couple of years ago my SIL was over and started to load my dishwasher. I just stood there watching her. She looked at me and said, "You have a certain way of loading this don't you?". I have never been able to let others do things in the house. I have gotten better since the day of the dishwasher but I need to be told it's ok for the kids to do it their way.
My favorite is vacuuming and I do not like doing bathrooms.

My least favorite chore is bathrooms: they're always gross (I have four boys with bad aim). My favorite chore is making bread. I love the way it feels and I always feel like I'm connecting with women all over the world when I do it. Also I hate folding the white laundry--so many little pieces, so many white socks to sort (and I don't even match them in pairs).

Favorite chore? Is there such a thing? It usually depends upon my mood . . . lately it's been vacuuming because we have a new vacuum. When that "newness" wears off, I probably would say that putting away and straightening the kids books is most enjoyable. Least favorite? That might be vacuuming and mopping the kitchen floor - it looks dirty within an hour of me cleaning it!

Emptying the dishwasher is my least favorite, but I love to load it! I love it because you can see a huge difference with very little effort. For some reason, emptying it seems like a lot of effort...

I guess if I HAD to pick a "favorite" chore I would have to choose...are you ready for this? Laundry. There, I said it. Only washing it though, not folding or putting it away (perhaps because the washer does most of the work?)...I guess I just really have this thing for fresh, clean laundry! Weird, I know. My least favorite chore is dusting, by far!

I have to admit that I love doing laundry. My washer and dryer are in the kitchen, so I stand and fold everything onto the kitchen table straight from the dryer. While listening to a book. Then I have everyone put away their own stack of clothes.

My least favorite has to be dishes. I don't mind unloading the dishwasher, but I can't stand even touching dirty dishes. Luckily, when I married my husband we agreed that he never has to do laundry and I never have to do dishes!

Disclaimer: I already own this book (love it!) although I think it is currently lost somewhere in my messy house which is beside the point. What I'd like to know is exactly what types of jobs/chores you require of each child/age. My kids think they are quite picked on because they have daily chores and extra ones on Saturday. I think I should be expecting even more of them. What's your personal arrangement? (If I may be so bold as to pry.)
