Get Me To The Church On Time
I got another fabulous idea from a friend last week. I know. I have brilliant friends. What this friend has started doing is having a devotional with her family 30 minutes before Church starts.
She makes a treat like muffins or banana bread and anyone who is ready for the devotional on time gets to participate in scriptures and prayer and the treat. I know. It's bribery. I don't think my kids would necessarily care about the treat as much as spending that time with the family instead of getting yelled at to hurry up already. Not that I ever yell. Especially not on the Sabbath. Heavens no.
I haven't quite figured out how finding time to make a special treat makes Sunday mornings easier but we all know the real truth behind the matter of the devotional deadline. It is not about the children getting ready on time. It's about the Mom getting herself and the meals ready and getting the girl's hair done and changing diapers, and packing everything up, etc. on time. Maybe I need to assign the treat to one of the kids to make. Now look how brilliant I am!
We go to Church from 11:00-2:00 so we've eaten breakfast but it's too early for lunch before we leave so everyone is starving to death by the time we get home. Not to mention that Church is also in the middle of Lovely's nap time. It makes that last hour very difficult. And yes, I think getting through three hours of Church with children of any age is meant to be a trial of every Mother's faith. Obviously. What else could it be for?
So I thought I would try the devotional last Sunday. I got the muffins made and lunch and meals in crock pots and everyone was ready for the devotional by 10:31. Except me. That's when I realized that actually telling everyone about the devotional might have helped things along but oh well. Can we blame it on the time change?
I was ready a few minutes later, we ate our muffins and ran out the door without a devotional but on time for Church! That was the important part. We will try the devotional thing again next week because I'm determined to make it work, with or without treats.
P.S. I was so organized that I had oatmeal in the crock pot Saturday night set on a timer so we would have breakfast all ready in the morning except that the crock pot never turned on. No problem. I just turned it on the next morning and we ate it for lunch.
I also put dinner in a different crock pot Sunday morning except that somehow it mysteriously got unplugged so we also didn't have any dinner. That's when you wonder why you even try and you fry up some bacon and eggs and everyone is deliriously happy anyway because they can't remember the last time they ate such wonderfully exotic food.

ha ha ha! my kids would probably be happy with cereal for all meals! good luck next week! and um? you have more than one crockpot? lucky... :O(
I have a big one and a small one but one more couldn't hurt could it? One with a timer that works would be nice.
I'd love to know how you make oatmeal in a crock pot !!
I can't believe you go to church from 11 - 2 !! Are the kids sitting with you that whole time ?? Do they sit and listen or do you have activities for them to do ? Do you feed them during this time ? That is a loooong church service !!
Perhaps making the treat the night before would be a good idea ...
The kids have primary or nursery for two hours and then we all meet together for Sacrament Meeting the last hour.
You can find directions for crock pot oatmeal at the bottom of this post. I like it best with a chopped apple and some cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.

That's a great idea!
We have church at 9:00 and I only have one child, so we usually are ok with time, but he takes FOREVER to eat his breakfast sometimes.
I'll have to remember this idea for when he is a little older.
That sounds like a great idea! I bet it would help with the mood right before you run out the door!
I like our church time (11:30-2:30), except for the hunger part.
It would be a great habit to get into even if you have little ones. It's something I wish I had always done. Even when I was single I was rushing off to Church!
Oh, how I wish this would work in my family. I'm lucky if I can get everybody awake in time for our 8:30 meeting. At least we make it in time for Primary most weeks.
Just a newlywed, not yet a mum, but erm... I think I'm a bit too lazy to allow myself to do all those tasks. Somebody better be helpin'... like, hubby?
LOL!! I swear you are writing about me! Right down to the "deliriously happy" children over eggs and bacon. Anytime bacon is made in our house, it's a huge celebration of loving praise to my culinary skills!
Why IS 11am church so hard to get to on time??? Always five minutes late. No. matter. what. Plus, we teach primary and those kids need, ya know, their teachers and all.
I've never tried putting the crock pot on a timer, or having it on while I'm gone all day either. I guess I'm afraid that something may happen while I'm not there to keep an eye on it.
Oh and by the way Lara, stop by my blog when you get a chance, I have something for you :)

we have church at 12:30 this year and we still don't get lunch because by lunch time they are all dressed and I don't want them to get messy again.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has best laid plans get messed up on Sunday.
Just last week while driving to church my 4 year old asked me if we were late. I said yes and then she asks, "Is it because you took too long getting ready?" To which I replied, "No, if I only had to get myself ready I would have been on time but I also had to get 3 little girls ready."
This is a grand idea. I wish I had known about this years ago when my kids were all little. The 3 oldest, all girls, are all married with kids of their own. Then I have 3 teenage boys at home, ages, 20, 17, 16. Our church starts at 9:30 and my hubby and my boys are late every.sunday.
We all have our own cars so we all drive seperate cars. I can NOT stand to be late so I am there every week on time and they all come dragging in.late.
The point of this story is, no matter how old they get, they never outgrow this late thing!
Good luck with your efforts. I admire you for trying. A friend said to me years ago, it's exercising my faith!
I am sure in shape if that's the case!
