A Few of My Favorite Things

  1. Climbing up and down a ladder in the middle of the night when I'm nine months pregnant to get to the smoke detector on the twelve foot high ceiling in our entryway because my husband doesn't love me enough to be home to do it for me.
  2. Staying up all night listening to a smoke detector that won't shut up regardless of the fact that I put a new battery in it.
  3. Taking the smoke detector down and running it over with my van a few times so I can finally get some sleep.*
  4. Trying to eat an entire pineapple in one day.
  5. Not being able to eat anything salty for three days because I have a crippled tongue.
  6. Scrubbing every metal thing in my home with steel wool until it shines and my fingers bleed. I may not feel like doing anything else but apparently I can't survive without clean cookie sheets, sinks and drinking fountains. Shiny metal is really important when you are getting ready to have a baby. Baby clothes, car seats and cribs? Not so important.
  7. Reading 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and finding out I could be 5000 times more effective if I exercised initiative, was smart, aware and sensitive to others.
  8. Deciding that learning to be satisfied with my ineffectivness is easier than trying to change my lazy, incompetent and selfish personality.
  9. When Daddy Drill Sergeant comes home just in time to make the kids clean up all their messes and send them to bed so I can be ineffective, lazy, incompetent and selfish in peace and quiet.

* #3 May not have actually happened but it would have been one of my favorite things if it had.

Why is it the smoke detector battery always dies in the middle of the night? Even when my husband is in town, he never hears it and I am the one up on the ladder fixing the thing.

#3 is my favorite ! Whether it happened or NOT ! That incessant beep of the low battery in a fire alarm is sooo irritating. We had one do it once for about 8 months. We only heard it when we were in the back yard though. And the reason we didn't fix it ? It was our next door neighbors !!!! I don't know how they stood it !! And get this ... he was the fire chief !! Small towns !! Gotta love 'em ! Well, we did ... for a while but now we've moved !! :)

uh, smoke detector ... fire alarm ... not the same thing now that I think about it !! Smoke detector is what I was thinking ... fire alarm is what I typed !! :)

Too bad #3 didn't happen. I especially liked that one!!!! :)

I hear you on those things! I have attacked ours with the broom handle to 'silence' it when I am roasting veggies, and it insists on going off. I find yelling at it (you know, informing it that I am roasting vegetables NOT burning down the house) doesn't silence it quite as well as the broom handle.

But then...our ceilings aren't 12' high! Good luck with that!

Btw, lazy, incompetent, selfish are perfectly acceptable in month #9. Carry on!

That happened to us when my little girl was a baby. Our smoke detectors were hard wired with battery back up. We had to end of completely disconnecting them. Amazing enough....she slept through the whole thing! I can laugh about it now, but it wasn't so funny then!

I hate it when the smoke detector chirps! It always seems to happen at night...

You sent shudders down my spine mentioning those chirps. Yes, why does it always happen at night? And then walking from detector to detector, "It think it's this one!" Good reminder to replace the batteries!

Have you read "Leadership and Self-Deception?" It's short, quick, easy to 'get' and very very inspirational. I don't entirely like the title, but I haven't thought of what to change it to yet. Goes along with wanting to be "aware and sensitive." I think I'm a pretty nice person, and it made me want to call and apologize to a couple people for how terribly I'd treated them. I recommend it to everyone and have given it away several times.
