Smart Habit Saturday

Welcome! If you are new to SHS find out all about it here: Getting Started with SHS. Click here to read more SHS posts. Please don't forget to link back to this post so your readers can find out more about SHS.

It's a new month and time for a new habit! I'm pretty excited about the habits I've already worked on this year. They are things that are making a big difference in my life. In January it was meal planning, February was changing my laundry system to one load a day and keeping the van cleaned out and March was paperwork. No more piles of mail. That's my biggest accomplishment of all!

This month I need to work on a habit I can accomplish sitting on my butt because I'm eight months pregnant and not feeling very spunky. I've been talking about getting our finances in order so maybe it's time to focus on that.

We're pretty conservative when it comes to spending but I would like to keep track of where the money is going to see if we can cut back in certain areas. I would like to get busy implementing some of Janine's ideas and I am also going to meet with a bookkeeper to get my business finances organized and under control. That sounds like a lot so I will have to tackle it a little bit at a time.

I can't wait to find out what your new habits will be!

If you are new and you want to catch up on last year - Smart Habit Saturday 2007

*Important - Please link to your individual SMART Habit post instead of your home page or else my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder will have to spend time fixing the links. Here is how you link to an individual post if you’ve never done it before: Right click on the date at the bottom of the post you want to link to (or the post title depending on where you blog) click “Copy Shortcut” and then paste it into Mr. Linky.

I've been much better about tracking spending than I have been about reading the mail! I recently found unopened mail from a few weeks ago, with an invitation in it! Ugh!
Just a warning about tracking your spending... you will probably be surprised at how much money goes for the little things... I know I was.

I've linked to my blog but not the specific post because I don't know how to do that yet. I will try to learn!

I try not to use cash unless absolutely necessary (toll booths aren't very into check cards) and use my bank card for everything. Then I download it into our money managing program and see where the money goes every month. I like it because I can keep myself and my husband on track.

We've also signed up for our bank's "auto save" program which they match at the end of the year. This year we got an extra $86 from our bank by just participating. The best part is I don't have to do a single thing-aside from using my bank card-to get the rewards!

These tips have helped us live without credit cards for almost three years now! Financial independence, here we come!

We used to be really good about tracking spending, but that has definitely gone by the wayside for us. It is definitely a habit that will be useful!! Good luck!

Ugh--so with you on keeping track of paperwork and finances! I need to follow your lead and hire some help for my business finances. Two things that make our family finances run much more smoothly: Open our bank account online and just look at it every day--reality check + better awareness of all those little expenses. And to spend a full, uninterrupted hour once a week to pay bills etc--that way I don't forget little details.

Go Lara! I need to do the same thing, but I am in denial. I know that if I did track my spending I would be sick to my stomach seeing how much I spend on nothing.

I'm back. I haven't posted much, but I think about you all every Saturday!

Every time I read the habit goals of others, I think, "I Should do that one TOO!"

So I am covering my eyes and ears saying, "My bills are just fine. My bills are just fine."

Seriously, thanks for doing this and for sharing your life habits with us.
