Smart Habit Saturday

Welcome! If you are new to SHS find out all about it here: Getting Started with SHS. Click here to read more SHS posts. Please don't forget to link back to this post so your readers can find out more about SHS.

My grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.

Ether 12:27
That is one of my favorite scriptures. It gives me hope that I won't have these weaknesses of mine forever.

April is my month of getting financially organized and apparently learning to bake with sour dough because it seems that I'm spending every spare minute babysitting my sour dough projects. Today it was sour dough pancakes, muffins and pizza. Tonight I'm starting on a new sour dough bread recipe because the last one was terrible. I used to think I had to be organized and prepared to bake homemade bread because it took several hours from start to finish. That's nothing! Sour dough bread takes days!

Anyway, if I hadn't spent all day baking I definitely would have worked on our new budget. Except that I'm not really going to make a budget. I just want to keep track of our spending so we are more aware of areas we can cut back. Even though I already know the area where we need to cut back. Eating out.

We have already cut back a lot since I've been doing better with meal plans but Stranger works out of town and that is a big eating out expense. I need to teach him to start packing some of his own meals. Or he needs to teach me. Or something.

My Mom spoke to a homeschooling group this week about being Rich On Any Income. It is a book that she took a class on years ago and it motivated her to start budgeting. What perfect timing for my goals this month!

My first assignment is to go through all our credit card statements and figure out what we spent in each expense category last year. It's going to be a big job so we'll see if I can get started on it tomorrow. I'll try my best to stay out of the kitchen and not play with the sour dough too much.

I have inherited Quickbooks from my MIL that I'm going to start using for my business and home finances and we have a new toy to get our receipts organized. I'll share more about that later.

Have a great Habit week!

Eating out was a budget killer for us. When we finally stopped and looked at what we were spending it was embarrassing. Now we eat out as a family once a month and my husband go out 3 times a month for date night. We usually go to a nice place once and to a quick place (like Panera) the other two times. I am glad we stopped going out so much because it seems healthier to me to eat at home.

sorry, what I meant to say was "my husband and I" go out 3 times a month.

Thanks for letting me read your book. I hope that I wasn't too pushy about borrowing it. I have finished it. I think that it has some great ideas about really figuring out why and how. I will bring it back to you tomorrow or on Sunday.

I am impressed with all your baking.

Lara, love Rich on Any Income. I need to go back to that. Good Luck!

We actually eat out more now. For years we were so strapped financially. Now that we only have a mortgage we can treat ourselves and our kids a bit more often without any guilt.

Thanks for the book recommendation! I love that scripture too. It has always been one of my favs. Good thing we have reminders like that to help us calm down. :) Good luck this week! Budget stuff is always a killer.

We use Microsoft Money to keep track of our expenses. My husband is good at updating it from our credit card statements every week or two. It really is nice to know where all the money is going. For us, since we live so far away from family, a big chunk of our money goes to airplane tickets. Now our baby is 2, so we have to buy him a seat, we are not going to be able to fly quite as often!

I appreciate you hosting this, Lara.

I need this accountability and it makes me THINK about the habit I am working on.

I goofed and posted this week's habit on last week's post. I couldn't figure out how to delete it. Sorry.

I'd like to categorize my expenses too. Maybe next year. :-) Good luck.
