My Secret Recipe for Teaching Kids to Make Their BedsBed making has eluded this family for years but now, finally, all five members are making their beds every single day! You might call it a miracle but I call it years of calculated planning and patience. Here is my fool proof method:
- Announce to your husband as soon as you get married that you want the bed made. Ignore him when he says that you never made the bed before he married you so why should you start now.
- Nag husband about making the bed for a year or so and then give up and live with an unmade bed. Note: I sleep at night but my husband most often sleeps during the day so I could make the bed all I wanted when I got out of it but it was never made by the time I got into it.
- Try again a couple years later and give up again.
- Have some kids.
- Religiously make their beds every day because you can and they will stay made.
- When the kids are old enough spend a couple years teaching and helping them make their beds.
- Figure that eventually they will want to and be able to do it on their own.
- Get over that fairy tale and start nagging them every day to make their beds.
- Give up nagging and start threatening. Do that for a few years.
- Take away all their covers and make them sleep on a cold mattress.
- Don't do that last one but think about it really hard for a while.
- Mention again to your husband that you would like the bed made every day and couldn't he please just straighten his pillows and pull up the covers on his side of the bed when he gets out of it.
- Be amazed that he actually starts doing this. Most of the time.
- Wonder why all of a sudden he doesn't toss and turn and mess up the bed covers like he used to.
- Let your kids make a new family rule that any child who forgets to make their bed before they eat breakfast has to make everyone else's bed the next morning.

- Sit back and enjoy having children that make their beds EVERY SINGLE MORNING all by themselves without being reminded!
- Wonder why all of a sudden your children don't toss and turn and mess up the bed covers like they used to.
- Pat yourself on the back for having such an excellent detailed plan and the fortitude to follow through with it for 12 years.
Alternate plan in case you have a Lovely living in your house.
- When your child is three years old teach her how to make her bed.
- Make it with her for one week.
- Now that she knows how to do it on her own, ask her to make it every day as soon as she gets up.
- Don't be surprised at all that she does it.
- Hug and kiss her every morning when she runs to tell you how pretty her bed looks.
- Repeat every day after her nap.
- Mommy lives happily ever after.
- The end.

NICE. I have it pretty much mastered with my 7 year old, but for some reason my 4 year old could care less...I guess persistence pays off!
I love love love when you do video of your kids doing something around the house. I show it to my kids and say "look at those perfect children, they ALWAYS make their bed and look so happy doing it." I then tell my child that is close to Lovely's age "see she is only three and you are OLDER than her, can you make it like her?" See that gets to my kids, seems they don't want to be out done by some one younger. Works like a charm! I love love love it!!! Thanks so very much!

I love that she wanted to take a picture of your bed. All that jumping - so cute!
Can you move into my house? I announced the bed thing when we got married, it worked with my husband but my kids are a different story. Just yesterday we told the boys they were allowed on blanket and one pillow and that's it. They all claim they can't sleep with only one blanket, but they can't make their bed when the entire contents of their room is in the bed either.
I always forget the essential part of jumping on the bed as part of making it! That is too cute!
I also use the rule about making everyone elses bed if you forget to make yours! (Some days I secretly hope one of my daughters will actually forget to make her bed so I have one less chore for MYSELF the next day!) Great post!
Your lovely is adorable! I guess it's time to concentrate on this with my 5 year old. The 2 year old is pretty good at pulling covers up, even if they're not straight when she is done.
The funny thing about the jumping is that I took two videos and she made the bed exactly the same way, with the jumping, both times. I guess it fluffs the covers!
Adorable video. I enjoyed reading your original 'Secret Recipe for Teaching Kids to Make Their Beds', which made me laugh!
That's so cute. Love the fluffy cover and the jumping. Very handy to have a window to sit on!
Thanks for the advice. I'll have to give it a try. Especially about the husband making his side.
Hey I just ran into your family at McD's. What a nice hubby to get the kiddies away from you for a little R&R. Good luck with that little bundle coming soon!
Kristi
Good for you! I'm in the stage where I just ignore the beds and hope no one gets lost or suffocates in their covers. But I'm sure I'll go back to the nagging again, soon.
Oh I laughed so hard at the "make them sleep on a cold hard mattress", and then "don't really do it, just think about it really hard for a while." Thank you for making me smile!
I just lokked at your baby day counter. Tomarrow you will be in the single digits!! Wahoo. But first you have to get through today and that could take a year. Good luck!
I love that Lovely! She makes the best videos!
Bed making is part of the kids routines in the morning, and for some reason it makes my day so much better when their beds are made, LOL!
First off, I can't believe you are down to 10 days! Wonderful. Good luck with the labor and delivery and thereafter!
Loved your bed-making post. How fun!
So my issue is that I make my kids change their sheets and it's gone from IMPOSSIBLE to just a hard job. Somehow I didn't teach them that the fitted sheet goes on first and then the flat sheet. Or, I did teach them and they decided to improvise. What can be the purpose of a flat sheet underneath the fitted one? My brains sure don't work like theirs do!!
Thank you for writing this the way you did. I was excited to read your tips but preparing myself to feel unable to do what you've done. But your plan sounds just like mine, though I think it will take me 14 years instead of 12 consdering that this new one is going to have to be trained soon. I've had to teach mine how to make bunkbeds and I always feel so bad for them because bunkbeds set against a wall are super hard to make, even for me.
