Iceberg Overdose

Stranger was finally done with his meetings and we were driving around Sun Valley looking for a good place to have dinner. The kids were starting to complain from all the driving and and no eating that was going on so we fell back to our normal routine. We stopped to ask someone on the street for a recommendation. We always try to look for someone local because they would obviously know the best place to eat in town. Who we found was Ricky. Ricky was obviously local. He had a ponytail. Ponytails are always local. Turns out Ricky owned the small BBQ place we had pulled up in front of but it wasn't open for dinner so he told us about the next best thing.

You could tell by looking at this place that the food was going to be good. Look at the outside dining. The pretty flowers. The trendy decor. The locals. We had to catch our breath when we saw the prices on the menu but it was too late to turn back now and besides Ricky had promised it would be great. Ricky wouldn't let us down, right?

When our food was served one phrase of Ricky's stuck out in our minds. "They have great beer." Apparently when you're drinking great beer you don't care about the food. Do you see that side salad up there? That wasn't a side salad. That was the dinner salad that I ordered. It was a (small) pile of iceberg lettuce. It cost $9. I could have bought a year's supply of ice burg lettuce for $9.

Persistence ordered the kids chicken fingers that came with fries and applesauce. $6. She got two tiny pieces of chicken, not even a hand full of fries and when she showed me her applesauce I snorted. It was in a tiny little condiment cup, almost too small for her to fit her spoon in.

Stranger got to pick two sides with his beef brisket. $20. There were three sides to choose from. Two of them were coleslaw. He also ordered a soda. Refills cost extra.

We never order anything for Lovely. She only eats about four bites so we share. Except this time there wasn't enough to share. After spending $50 on dinner we all went home hungry. If it hadn't been so hysterical we probably would have been crying.

I reasoned that we had paid for the entertainment. The hula hoops that they had for the kids to play with were the most fun we've had all week. Besides, that's what convenience stores are for. You always know what you're getting with microwave popcorn and licorice.

That would've been maddening for me to pay all that for such a small amount. It reminds me of that commercial where the couple finally gets to go eat at the fancy restaurant and they comment that their small portions look like chipmunk food. Then afterwards they go and stock up at the store just like you. The hula hoops do look like fun though.

I bet next time you'll buy the kids each their own hula hoop, stop at a farmer's market and save $35.00.

I think Ricky With the Tail didn't really own the "not yet opened" BBQ. I think it was a ruse so you didn't know he owns the Nine Dollar Lettuce Cafe.

Ohhhhh......the joy of vacation food - overpriced and you aren't every sure what you are going to get. Hopefully your other meals have left tummies more satisfied, but the hula hoops do look like maybe they saved the meal, at least the kids had fun!

Oh I hate it when that happens! And It can happen a lot when you are an ingredient freak like me! When we travel I ALWAYS take a bin of healthy snacks. We always try to stay in at least a place with a small fridge. So if we want to go to the grocery store we can. And we only eat out for dinner (and many times we end up like that and go back to the room to snack;) unless we have a condo with a kitchen and a BBQ then my hubby helps me with the cooking and that's fun.
