Organize Your Breakfast

Have you ever wondered what the difference was between a farm fresh egg and an egg from the store? Now you know. Guess which one is more nutritious?

My project this year is centered in the kitchen. I've been working on food storage and learning how to cook and grow new foods. The garden didn't happen like I had hoped but I still want to try my hand at canning this fall with whatever produce I can scrounge up from friends and neighbors. I ran into a neighbor at the store today who offered to share her garden with me. I swear I didn't chase her down and invite myself over to pick green beans and apples. She really did offer.

My kids are already a great help to me in the kitchen and we will eventually figure out the meal planning thing. Just so you know we made a meal plan this week and we are diligently following it. Two days down. Impressive, I know.

In addition to that we are implementing a breakfast schedule. We eat the same menu every week and we take turns cooking. We tried this before I had the baby but failed miserably because I couldn't get my butt out of bed to implement it. We actually resorted to cold cereal during those final days of misery.

We have weaned ourselves off the cold cereal now and are back on the schedule. Hopefully it works better this time around. (add fruit to all of the following)

  • Sunday - eggs and toast, Victor

  • Monday - hot cereal, Persistence

  • Tuesday - muffins, Mom

  • Wednesday - pancakes, Victor

  • Thursday - eggs and toast, Persistence

  • Friday - bagels, Mom

  • Saturday - German pancakes, Mom
We set a goal of having breakfast ready by 9:30. Aren't we so ambitious? Today was my day and we didn't eat until 11:00. Clearly I have a lot of room for improvement. The kids think I need to set my alarm and get up before ten because they are hungry. I think carrots sticks make a great morning snack.

My kids seriously love this schedule though. They can see exactly what they will be eating (it's written on the white board in the pantry) and who will be making it. It assures their little minds that they will not starve to death. Eventually someone will be feeding them even if it happens later rather than sooner. It's funny how the person in charge of cooking breakfast is never as hungry as the people that are waiting for it.

LOL! I think your schedule is wonderful! But we all adore cold cereal around here. We even eat it for snacks! Plus I can't cook that early in the morning (before 9:30) I'd burn the house down! ;)

It's fun to see how different families find a schedule that works for them. I had a lot of questions about our own meal planning/cooking schedule. I've a got a post in the works for that.

I love that the schedule stays the same and you even know who is in chage of making it. This is something we can do through the summer, but during school breakfast has to be eaten before 7:30am, so a hot one is hard to come by. (One of the many things I miss about homeschooling)

I think this is a great idea. For our family it could be difficult since Mom is a morning bird and ready to eat by 7am while the family is made up of 3 night owls who have no interest in getting out of bed for anything short of life or death before 9am. So by the time they got around to making breakfast and it was ready to eat I'd be wanting lunch.

I second Kimberly's comment. Stolen!!! I just wish my kids were old enought to make some meals. What things could I have a 6 year old make? Any ideas?

Dreamer, Unsupervised? Sandwiches and cold cereal! Persistence started making pancakes by herself at that age but I had to be right there helping. At that age she was also learning how to use a knife to cut vegetables and such. She has been helping me in the kitchen since she was little but that investment of my time has paid off in a big way! I'm expecting her to get her own cooking show and book deal any day now so she can not only cook for me but support me too!

I've thought about doing a breakfast schedule like this to get us off of cold cereal every morning. I just assumed my girls wouldn't eat those things, but they love scrambled eggs, pancakes, and oatmeal when I do make it.

I think a schedule like this is a great idea. I may try to do this for lunch.

My problem with trying this for breakfast, is that I LOVE cold cereal (but only the good kinds--anything with bran, flax or granola in the name). I could almost eat it for 3 meals a day. So I have no motivation to make my kids pancakes, etc, because I'd rather have cereal. What do you have against cold cereal? Just curious.

I really need to have a breakfast schedule, although it would be all me making it. I have also been seriously thinking about how I need to have a lunch schedule as well.
