Education of a Wandering Family

I didn't start out liking the 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss but I ended up loving it. Tim and I don't have much in common but one thing is certain. We are both independent spirits. Except that while he's traveling the world shark diving and cage fighting I'm at home washing my hair with baking soda and baking sour dough bread. So I'm getting the idea from his book that maybe I could step my dreams and aspirations up a notch. Especially for my kids' sake.

Last October I blogged about the fact that Stranger wants to move South of the border so our whole family can learn Spanish. Back then it was kind of a joke but it's not a joke anymore. We are going to do it! When? Oh in about three years. We need time to pack and to potty train Sister Sweetness and then we're off. After about a year of learning Spanish we're going to buy a sailboat and sail around the world for a year. Or maybe we'll do both at the same time. I wonder if our food storage will fit on the boat.

I've been bugging Stranger about quiting the railroad for some time now. It's a very secure job with great benefits and a crappy schedule. You'll never know how crappy until you've lived it. (On call 24/7 with 28 days off a year) But when I talk about him quitting he says, "But I get to run trains!" If you quit you get to sail a boat with your family! If he wants to run trains when we get home he could always buy a 40 mile railroad line with a spare 50 million dollars or so.

So we're going to do it. Next summer he's going to get his skippers license and all of us are going to get scuba certified. Then the next year we will spend 28 days on a sailboat for a practice run and the year after that we will be off on our great learning adventure. Stranger says we'll have an extra room on the boat for guests if you want to visit. Who wants to sign up to take care of our chickens while we're gone?

The only real question I have is this...Can we get intenet in the middle of the ocean?

When I was talking to a friend of mine about our plans she told me about a documentary she had just watched - A remarkable story of a conventional family of five living a very unconventional life afloat. They look like a bunch of lunatics to me but the ocean should be big enough for more.

A good friend did the vic-maui sailboat race and the team blogged the whole thing. You can definitely get internet via satellite in the middle of the ocean. Not cheaply, however.

What? Are you serious? I would NEVER do that. Boats kind of make me sick.

OOOOOH, OOOH can I come too? That sounds awesome. I knew a family on my mission that did that very thing. They also rode bikes all the way across Canada from one coast to the other. They had teenage kids of course. I want to take a year or two and travel the world. That is my number one most biggest dream ever!

I saw that documentary and it was really interesting...not quite my kind of life though.

Also, we have homeschool friends who moved to Mexico for 6-12 months simply for the kids to learn Spanish. It worked and they had a great time! So, give it a go!

My DH would want to stay and play with trains, too! LOL!!

Wow- I think dreams are great! Those are some big ones. As for moving south of the border- we did it and I LOVE it! I live in the Mormon colonies in Chih., MX and have for 2 1/2 years now. My son knows spanish almost as well as he knows English, he is only 4. Best thing we have ever done. Tight knit fun little community with enough Mexico to not kill you off, just give you adventures and learning experiences.

My cousin did something similar - packed up the family and moved to New Zealand for a year - first they RV'd around both the North and South Islands. They loved it.

Another family I know is Rving around the country (I think they got offered a tv show). So there, he might not make his 50 million, but maybe he could buy a really nice train whistle once your adventures get turned into a reality tv special. (We'll totally house sit for you)

Are you serious?! Wow--way to step up your dreams! I hope you can figure out a way to blog about it, if only for my bloggy enjoyment. :)

I admire you for pursuing a dream! I sure hope you can get internet access so we can follow along. Thanks for the heads up about a railroading career. My husband has been stirring around the idea but it's the whole being gone for long periods of time where we keep getting stuck.

Our big dream is to travel A LOT with and without the kids, but mostly with. We've got the kids homeschooling now so it's even easier and we've been doing mini vacations. The big trip is planned in 2-3 years and we're going all through Europe for 18-24 months. With work location independent and the kids homeschooling we are planning on staying out as long as we like.

I think heading South would be awesome. That Mormon compound sounds like something I might actually be more interested in. I'd go to Mexico if we stayed there.

Hope you have the greatest time, whatever you end up doing.

By the way, we loved that book. It didn't really change any of our plans but it gave us fuel to the already roaring fire.

Dang. I was going to speak for chicken duty but it looks like Lillian beat me to it. Can we split the flock?

OH MY! Would this be my dream! Well, except for the boat...seasickness....but the poster up there doing the 1-2 years in europe....sign me up for THAT! haha...that's one of themain reasons we are homeschooling...travel, travel, travel...but LIVING internationally?? Call me naive, but how does one actually achieve this financially? Is there some secret? Our mortgage and student loans would sink our boat, literally.

Hello. Due to my own computer problems, it's been a while since I have been over here. So many wonderful things going on as usual. Just wanted to tell you about some books your kids might enjoy along the lines of these sailing plans.

1. Dolphin Diaries -Simple chapter book series about a girl whose father is an ocean biologist.

2. Shadows in the Water: A Starbuck Twins Mystery, Book Two (A Starbuck Twins Mystery) (Paperback)
by Kathryn Lasky

I bet your daughter would enjoy the first series, but your whole family would probably enjoy the second book. Each year my classes really like it and I think everyone wishes they could spend time on a boat!
