Talk About New Ideas

Talk About TuesdayWelcome to Talk About Tuesday! If you are new, check out the Guidelines before posting.

I have figured out what my Internet addiction is all about. I thought it was me being a lazy slacker but really it's all about my thirst for knowledge. I want to know everything! I have less of a desire to do everything but I do have that too. I have even less of a desire to know everyone. So that's what I've figured out. Some people are, in general, thinkers, some are doers and some are feel-ers (people persons). Did I miss anyone?

I am a thinker. Not because I'm smart. I just have a sincere desire to know everything there is to know about life, the universe and everything. The sad thing about this is I have a horrible memory so I can't remember what I read or thought about yesterday let alone last year. I may not be getting anywhere in my quest for knowledge but I'm treading water fast I tell you!

I'm not interested in trivial facts but I love new ideas. I am always thinking, "Why didn't I think of that before?" or "Why haven't I heard of that before?" Sometimes I feel like the universe is conspiring to keep things from me. There is obviously a lot of stuff out there that I need and want to know about. Why aren't people stopping me on the street, for instance, and telling me the easiest way to peel an egg? (It didn't work for me by the way.)

If I'm not reading a book, I'm on the Internet looking for new ideas. I was poking around last week and followed a link to TED. Now here's where I have to get mad at a bunch of you. Why haven't any of you told me about TED before??? It's a conspiracy I tell you! TED is everything I love about the Internet. I stayed up till 2:00 in the morning watching it and I watched more with my kids today.

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader.

The annual conference now brings together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).

Here are some of my favorites so far:

A man brings mentors and students together in an amazingly creative way.

Another conspiracy.

This talk has changed my life. Seriously. Getting what we want doesn't make us any happier than not getting what we want? One of the biggest problems in my life is that I try to control every little detail of it. Now that I know I know I will be happy no matter what happens I think I can finally go take a chill pill. Some things you know but you don't really know until you get slapped in the face with them. Hard.

I can not rest until I have seen every single talk on TED.com. My new life's mission is to some day have an "Idea Worth Spreading".

*Important - Please link to your individual Talk About Tuesday post instead of your home page or else my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder will have to spend time fixing the links. Here is how you link to an individual post if you’ve never done it before: Right click on the date at the bottom of the post you want to link to (or the post title depending on where you blog) click “Copy Shortcut” and then paste it into Mr. Linky.

That last one was eye-opening, and has given me a lot to think about.

My personal circumstances cannot be changed, but how I feel about them can (now, if I can just get that frontal lobe working)

I am so sorry! Will you ever forgive me for not sharing TED with you? Will it help if I tell you I only discovered it less than a month ago and have only had the time to check out a handful of the videos off their RSS feed? No? Oh well. At least we can enjoy it together now!

I am a thinker too. I love new ideas. The TED talk I have spent the most time thinking about is one on child car seats. I don't have the link to it, but if you're planning on doing some searching around you should watch it and see what you think. If you find it, let me know.

I might have to check out the Brooklyn SuperHero Supply shop while I'm there next month! I hadn't seen that TED video before.

See, I should have watched all of the videos you posted before I commented. You already found the carseat one.

TED is SO COOL!!! I've seen a lot of excellent videos on there. I don't think I've seen any of the ones you posted so I'll have to check those out. I'm a thinker and a forgetter too. I'm always finding myself saying, "I don't know where I read or heard it recently, but it was something like..." Because of that I've tried to be better about keeping a "great things I want to remember" notebook close so I can write things down more and keep track of where I heard them. Still, there are plenty more that never make it there.

Regarding the car seat one: ARGH! Really bugs me, especially since our Utah lawmakers created that great new car seat law for us just this year.

I somehow lost your blog link! Crazy.

Nice to see you! I wrote a nice TAT post today, but haven't managed to link it and add in the TAT logo yet.

Our family just got back from vacation - a time my husband tends to do major thinking about life, priorities, goals, etc. He brought the FHWW along to re-read and came home SOOO pumped up about it all over again. So to come home and find you blogging about it is motivating him even more! We really hope you will reach your goals in three years (and in the interim). We are starting the wheels moving to make our lives more mobile too - hoping to be somewhere else in one year.

I tried the hard boiled egg trick on Sunday morning! I boiled 6. Only one worked. But boy, was it fun!

TED is another one of our favorites!

I saw a video on TED about the 5 dangerous things you should let your kids do...and then I posted about it on my blog. It was very informative.

I haven't looked at TED a lot because I think it's one of those black holes, as I've discovered youtube to be.

Yesterday, a friend was raving about something he's seen on TED that I have to check out. So, I will and get sucked in.

I'm a thinker too--I want to know everything, in all sorts of ways. Good thing we have a life of time to fill it with knowledge--and we'll never get to the end of that journey. That's exciting, isn't it?!

I only watched the first one for now, but Dave Eggers was AMAZING, but more so is his (and others) ideas to change the world, one person at a time.

Thanks for the link to TED. I have a feeling that too much of my time will be spent there...
