Disposable Bibs

This is going to be a short and sweet Works for me Wednesday. Did you know that a plastic grocery bag works great as a disposable bib on the go? Just stick a couple in your diaper bag to have on hand, tie the handles around your baby's neck and you are all set!

I keep a stash tied up into bundles in a drawer by the door so they are ready to throw into my purse, my car and my diaper bag. They are one of the many things I keep in my Purse Organizer. They're great for dirty diapers, muddy shoes or collecting leaves, rocks and sticks on family adventures. I couldn't live without them and their million uses!

Please Accept My Humblest Apologies

*Update

If you are waiting for Organizing Bags and you want to be notified when they are available please e-mail me and I will keep you updated. I am still several months away from having them in stock.

I am so sorry but I am now out of the Small and Large Organizing Bags. I just had no idea that all of you were going to get so crazy with your organizing and they would fly out of here as fast as they did. I promise to do my best to get more as soon as possible.

If any of you have ordered bags and you haven't yet left a comment here I would really appreciate it if you would take the time to post one. Let everyone know just what they're missing!

Thanks to all of you for your orders and comments here at The Lazy Organizer. You make doing this so fun and worthwhile!

Aren't They So Helpful?

Saturday night the kids all took baths so they would be clean and shiny for Church the next morning.

Sunday morning my 2 year old came toddling down the hall with her pajamas soaking wet from head to toe. This was beyond a leaky diaper. I thought, "How many cups of milk did we give her last night?"

As I peeled the wet pajamas past her bum I thought, "This diaper is so wet that it has fallen down her pajama pant leg." Except that I didn't find a diaper in her pant leg. Where's the diaper???

That's when I remembered how my “oh so helpful” 7 year old had dressed the Lovely after her bath last night and her father had put her to bed. She slept all night wet and cold with no diaper!!!

This is when I might claim that fathers tend to be completely oblivious to details of child rearing like these while any Mother on earth would surely detect a diaper-less baby bum as she was carrying it to bed. Except then an oblivious father might remind me about the time I sent the kids to Church by themselves in January when I was nine months pregnant and then absentmindedly locked all the doors and got in the bathtub for two hours with the jets on so I couldn't hear my cold crying children outside pleading to be let in until they finally gave up and walked to my friends house who just happened to be home from Church with a sick baby and I was lucky that she was a good enough friend that she didn’t call child protective services on me. Um. At least I think that makes her a good friend.

I’m not sure that putting a baby to bed without a diaper exactly qualifies as child abuse the way locking your children out in the cold does so I think I’ll stop while I’m behind.

Speaking of half dressed, this is what we found as we were getting ready to leave a restaurant the other day. How many times have you calmly eaten dinner with your pants around your ankles?

Smart Habit Saturday

Smart Habit SaturdayWelcome to Smart Habit Saturday! I have some news for you this week. I know there are a lot of people that are thinking of joining us but they haven't made the plunge yet. They might be wondering if they can really do it. They might be wondering if it is worth humiliating themselves publicly in order to make the changes they want to make. I'm not saying it's easy. It takes a brave soul to share their weaknesses and struggles with the world. All I can say is it's worth it.

This week I read in the Ensign a talk by by D. Todd Christofferson to the men of the Church but it applies to us women too, "True manhood (or womanhood) is not always measured by the fruits of one's labors but by the labors themselves - by one's striving. Though he (she) will make some sacrifices and deny himself (herself) some pleasures in the course of honoring his (her) commitments, the true man (woman) leads a rewarding life." " We all know that it's the journey that matters. We have a commitment to our families to do our best in taking care of them.

That brings me to my news. Anyone who participates in SHS for two weeks in a row by the end of March will be entered into a drawing to win 5 free Organizing Bags, three large and two small! Won't that be fun? I would love your help spreading the news so let your readers know that now is the time to join us at Smart Habit Saturday. I don't want to be responsible for leaving anyone out of the drawing so once you have completed two weeks of SHS please e-mail me and I will put your name on the list. If you have been participating all along go ahead and e-mail me now.

If you are new to SHS find out all about it here: Getting Started with SHS. Click here to read more SHS posts. Please don't forget to link back to this post so your readers can find out more about SHS.

This has been a stressful week for me and I didn't do my best with my habits. I have been busy writing talks. It's not like I have spent every minute working on them but I have spent every minute worrying about them instead of thinking about my habits! I have a new plan that might help me in the future. I'm going to make Joe's Goals my homepage so I don't forget to check my habits off every day.

I'm not going to make any new habits for next week. I'm going to keep working on what I've got because I really want to get better at keeping the kitchen counter cleaned off.

Week #7 - Playing with my kids - I did this all but about two days.
I'm not even going to talk about going to bed without snacks this last week!

Week #6 Kitchen and Studio clutter free- Working on it.
Week #5 Clear Counters - Working on it.
Week #4 Clear Desk Off - Working on it.
Week #3 Planner review - Habit!
Week #2 Prayer - Habit!
Week #1 Clean the toilet once a day – Slipping a little.

How did your habits go this week?

About Entertaining

A Juggling Mum has some ideas to make your morning run smoother. Personally I think it’s more fun to stay in my jammies till 3:30 and then rush around at the last minute to get ready to go to the gym. Oh my hectic schedule!

Laura has a return shelf, I used to have a return cupboard and now I have a return drawer. If you don’t have one for yourself, get one!

Kimberly has been on an organizing frenzy that has been fun to watch. Check out her posts for the last few weeks. Don’t we all love organizing photos? Now I want all of you to be nice and share yours with me too.

I have never intended for my blog to be a complete organizing tip resource. I just write about what I’m doing and I hope that it inspires you to get more organized and discover solutions that work for your own family. Fortunately there are people out there who have the energy to create such a resource for you. And not just about organizing. Check out Tipnut. Her sight is amazing! This post is especially good don’t you think?

Go support Thoroughly Mormon Millie at her Hopeful Housewife Support Blog. Just be careful that you don't snort your soda out your nose because she's funny.

Check out the results from my last poll About Blogging. I was surprised by how many of you spend less than an hour a day blogging. Either you don't have your own blogs or you are all a bunch of liars! Or maybe you're in recovery. I hadn't thought of that. Is it possible to be an unaddicted blogger?

This week you get two polls for the price of one.

What Mess?

This is why my studio doesn't have a craft table in it.

Unorganized Craft TableDo you think this table would have been cleaned off any time in the next millennium if we hadn't had to eat dinner on it that night?

No Ma’am!

Organized Craft ProjectsIt's a nicely contained mess just waiting to get worked on again. Now that wasn't so hard was it?

Many Are Called But Few Are Chosen

I have two, 4-5 hundred page books to read (The Chosen and Jane Eyre) by March 9th. It's for a class that Stranger and I are taking. He's already through his first one and I haven't started yet. I've read Jane Eyre a dozen times already so that one will be easy but I have only read The Chosen once, probably 12 years ago.

Then yesterday we were called upon to give talks in Church next Sunday. Short notice is wonderful because it cuts down on the worry time but it's stressful to think about getting four talks prepared in one week. Stranger tried to bribe me into writing his talk for him by working out with me tonight at the gym. "Sure honey, I'll get started on it right away!" The amazing thing is that last year we gave talks in our old ward and we were asked to speak on "Preparing Every Needfull Thing". It took me about 15 seconds to write an hour long discourse!

You'll never guess what topic we were given this time around. How has service in the Church blessed your lives??? Help!!! I am on the edge of my seat wondering what the selfish Wonder Trouble will come up with for that topic. This will definitely be a learning/growing experience for me. But I already have my first quote. I heard this on the radio so I need to figure out who said it, "Service is doing what you don't have to do." Duh.

Stay tuned!

Smart Habit Saturday

I was looking through Deneice Schofield's book, "Confessions of an Organizer Homemaker" the other day and came across this statement that really applies to all of us.

~Fyodor Dostoevsky once wrote, "It seems, in fact, as though the second half of a man's life is made up of nothing but the habits he has accumulated during the first half." That is a distressing statement, but we can alter the course of our lives with a little extra effort. We become aware of time-wasting habits when we think before we act.

Habits are great because they let us get things done quickly and effortlessly. We just have to make sure we create good habits and not bad habits. So let's get to it!

If you are new to SHS find out all about it here: Getting Started with SHS. Click on the label at the bottom of this post to read more SHS posts. Please don't forget to link back to this post so your readers can find out more about SHS.

Check out Joe's Goals!

Next week - I need to do something for my kids this time. In the morning when they finish their jobs they each get get to chose a game that I will play with them while they other one plays with Lovely. We've been forgetting to do this more often than not so I am going to make sure we do this every day until it becomes a habit.

Week #6 Keep Kitchen and Studio clutter free- It wasn't perfect but I did a really good job keeping these areas picked up. It looks wonderful! I didn't get all my organizing done in my studio (that's my new fancy name for my sewing room/office) but I installed hooks that have helped tremendously. I'm going to work on it some more this week.

I did much better this week with cutting out the night time snacking and sugar. My family showed me how much they love me by not buying me any Valentine treats. Opps I just got home from a party tonight where I inhaled more cookies and brownies than I can count! Rosie was right, these are good!!!

My extra goal to pamper myself this week was to take the time to read an article in my Church magazine every morning. I just don't make enough time to do the reading I want to do so this was wonderful! This week I am going to read an article every morning and every night as well.

Week #5 Clear Counters - Did it. It wasn't perfect but it still made a world of difference.
Week #4 Clear Desk Off - Did it.
Week #3 Planner review - Habit!
Week #2 Two personal prayers and one family prayer every day - Habit!
Week #1 Clean the toilet once a day – Habit!

Things I Organized Last Week

1. I’m so tired of the kids losing their stuff that I wrote our name and phone number with a permanent marker on every coat, jacket, bag and backpack I could get my hands on. Don’t ask me why I haven’t done this before! Hmmmm, could it be that I’m lazy?

2. I bought 9 under-bed totes, on sale for $3.50 each at Target, to organize the kids’ toys. I filled one with Lego’s, one with K’nex and one with cars to go under Victor’s bed. Persistence and I filled one with dishes, one with animals, one with her sleeping bag, and she used one for her “special” things that she doesn’t want her little sister to get into. Not that it will take Lovely long to figure out how to get into it. I filled two with extra laundry supplies and toiletries like soap and cotton balls to stash under my bed until I get my laundry storage finished.

3. I discovered, after printing labels for the containers in my baking center, that clear labels with black writing were not going to show up on black lids! I finally bought white tape for my label maker and made new labels.

4. I bought three more under bed storage containers. I love these! The kids and I organized our movies in them. One for me and one for them. There wasn’t quite room for all our movies so we put the extra in the donation bin. The kids and I all decided together which movies would go. Now I just need to buy more beds because there is no more room under beds we have and I want more of these containers!

5. I installed a towel hook in the front bathroom by the sink. Finally!

6. I hung a hook in my front entry for my chalkboard and another to hold chalk in a tin heart basket.

7. I installed another hook in my kitchen to hang a dish towel up away from little people and their dirty hands.

Don't be shy. Share your completed organizing or project list in the comments!

The Sweetness of the Sweaters

I've been at it with the hooks again. I realized it could take me 10 years to actually finish my closet so I installed some temporary hooks. I'm not even going to paint the boards because they are not staying there. Is that a bit too optomistic of me?

I have always kept my baby's clothes in my closet until they old enough to dress themselves and put their own clothes away. It makes it so much easier to get myself and the baby ready at the same time and in the same place.

I was organizing Lovely's clothes into gallon sized baggies but that was a pain so I gave up on it. I bought all these boxes over the New Year sales and I thought I'd see if I liked them better than bags. So far I do and I also think they're pretty! I have two outfits organized into each one.

The white bin holds her pajamas. Since I like to freeze everyone out at night she wears two pairs to bed. She has more pajamas than regular clothes. It doesn't look like a lot of clothes does it? There might be a few things in the wash but what you see here is about all she owns. I would rather have a few cute things than a closet full of cheap ugly clothes. That doesn't mean I buy expensive clothes. I live for sales! Three out of four of those sweaters hanging up were hand-me-downs from a cousin and I bought the fourth one on sale from Gymboree last year for $3.

I also got tired of throwing Organizing Bags on the floor in the corner of my office/sewing room and installed a few temporary hooks there as well. Thank heaven for power tools!

Organize Your Socks

“I KNEW you were wearing my socks!”

“Why do I have to keep telling you I don’t wear your socks?”

“Then how come I can see them on your feet?”

“Well, of course I’m wearing them NOW. I mean, normally I don’t wear your socks.”

“Then why don’t I ever have any socks in my drawer?”

Taking him by the hand and leading him into our bedroom to see at least a dozen pairs of sock littering the floor, “I think I have solved the case of the missing socks.”

A few days later I excitedly show him my new idea, The Sock Basket! He doesn’t seem impressed.

“Look! I put a basket right here next to the bed for you to throw your socks in!”

“That’s just dumb.”

“What do you mean? Now they won’t be all over the floor.”

“Well, it’s dumb that I throw my socks on the floor. You should tell me to stop doing it.”

I’m speechless. That is something I have never considered. If you don’t want your husband to throw his socks on the floor then you should ask him to stop doing it? I think that is going to be my next “This has never worked for me Wednesday but you should definitely try it for yourself.”

The sock basket has worked for me though and you really should try it. And then when your husband walks in the bedroom and sees a pair of your socks laying on the floor next to the bed he can laugh at you and make fun of you for being such a slob.

So I have shown you dirty socks in a basket. Now you are going to see a real treat: stockings in a bag.

You know how I feel about organizing with bags. I put my nylons into their own separate baggies to keep them from getting snagged in my drawer. If you have a larger collection than I do you could label the bags or (and I just thought of this) you could attatch the bag, using a clothes pin, to the outfit you wear the nylons with. I don't know. Now I'm probably just getting too crazy for you.

Here is one last sock tip for you. Instead of keeping your kid's socks in their rooms, find a spot for them by the back door. That way they can grab their socks and shoes and be on their way in a hurry. Not that you would ever be in a hurry. You are too organized for that!

Chicken Tortilla Soup

I threw this together for lunch with ingredients I had in the kitchen. It was wonderful! You could add black beans which I will do next time. You could also substitute milk or half and half instead of the cream. We all know I don't cook low fat!

Be careful because this soup is so good you may just swallow your spoon while trying to snarf it down.

Chicken Tortilla Soup

1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1/4 cup green pepper, chopped
1/2 large onion, chopped
2 cups water
3 chicken bouillon cubes
2 cups heavy cream
1 cup salsa
1/2 -1 cup frozen corn
1 can black beans, rinsed
1-2 cups chicken, shredded
cumin powder
chili powder
2 tablespoons corn starch
1 cup cold water
fresh cilantro, torn
tortilla chips
1 fresh lime
grated cheese

Saute garlic, green pepper and onion in a tablespoon of olive oil until soft. Add water, bouillon, cream, salsa, corn, chicken, and spices until boiling. Stir corn starch into cold water and add to soup slowly. After it's thickened add fresh cilantro and lime juice. Serve hot with tortilla chips and grated cheese.

Smart Habit Saturday

Happy Smart Habit Saturday! I want to do something special this week so tell me if you want to play along. Since we have been working so hard I thought it would be fun to treat ourselves and pick a habit that is all about us; something easy and fun. It could be rubbing foot cream on your feet every night before you go to bed. It could be putting on a pretty necklace every day even if you are just going to stay home and clean house in your pajamas! What do you think? Can you add something fun this week to your habits? If you already have your post up you can edit it our tell me in my comments what you are going to do for yourself this week. I can't wait to hear your great ideas!

I have good news this week. I'm taking three things of my list this week because they have all become habits! Cleaning my toilet, reviewing my planner and having three daily prayers are all things I couldn't live without now. I would have to work really hard to STOP doing them. Yay!!!

New Habit - This goes along with my habits from the last two weeks. I'm going to do a better job of keeping my kitchen and my office clean all the time instead of letting the mess build up before I deal with it. To do this I need to re-organize my office a bit. I've already started on this so I will tell you about it and post pictures later.

Week #5 Clear Counters - It took me a couple days to get this done but then I did better the rest of the week. I had a project I was working on yesterday and I left on the kitchen counter. I should have put it away but you know how it goes? "I'm going to get right back to this so I'll just leave it out," and then you don't touch it again for days! That's why we need to put things away, even if we are in the middle of it. I learned my lesson last week so I won't do it again.

My habit of going to bed without snacking was a miserable failure this week! It was my birthday on Sunday and my MIL gave me two bags of black licorice candy that I promptly ate AND she gave us a cheesecake that I finished off last night and then my son made a cake for the scout Blue and Gold banquet so I have been on a sugar high all week! When I eat sugar I overeat everything else as well. I'm going to keep sugar out of the house this week!

Week #4 Clear Desk Off - This is fast becoming a new habit.
Week #3 Planner review - Habit!
Week #2 Two personal prayers and one family prayer every day - Habit!
Week #1 Clean the toilet once a day – Habit!

Stuffed With Love

*Edited

Sew some adorable little Valentines for your family and friends. I like to make a basket full to pass out on Valentines Day. They're sweeter than candy!

First of all you will draw some hearts on a white piece of paper and cut them out. Don't make them perfectly symetrical. I like them oddly shaped with lots of character. Make different hearts instead of using the same pattern for all of them.

Place two pieces of fabric right sides together and trace your pattern with a pen onto one side, leaving enough room for a seam allowance all the way around.

Cut out the fabric 1/4" beyond your pattern line. You will sew directly on the line so you need a seam allowance beyond that.

Next you will sew around your heart right on the line you drew, using a sewing machine or a needle and thread. If you are using a sewing machine you will need to stop and turn your fabric after every stitch or two as you sew around the tight curves. Don't forge to leave an inch open so you can turn it right side out.

Clip to the V in the top of the heart before you turn it. Clip right to your stitches but not through them.

Turn your heart right side out using a flathead screwdriver to help push out the curves and points. Then use the screwdriver to stuff it as fat as you can get it.

Once it is completely stuffed you will stitch up the opening.

Add a pin to the back and a button tied on with linen string to the front if you'd like.

Can you feel the love?

*I forgot to mention that it's fun to pin these hearts to a card you are sending someone. It's a wearable love note!

The Trouble Maker

Stranger stormed into the office the other night. He obviously had something on his mind, something he’d been thinking long and hard about.

The Conversation

How long have you been in the Scout program?” he blurted out.

“I don’t know, about eight months,” I replied.

So they call you to work in the scouts and make you buy all those clothes and then you haven’t even been in there a year when they kick you out? (We just found a few days ago that I’ve been released from the Scouting program.)

No, they let me borrow the shirt.

Well, if they didn’t then you would have had to buy one right?

Yes.

That’s dumb that they would just get rid of you like that! Why do you have to cause so much trouble anyway?

Well, I’m a trouble maker. What can I say?

Then you’re just going to cause trouble somewhere else, no matter what your new calling is!

That’s true. Are you sorry you married such a trouble maker?

No, I just can’t believe they would get rid of you like that. I didn’t get rid of you!

Ahhhh, that is so sweet! It’s comforting to know that no matter how much trouble I cause, my husband will never get rid of me. Take that Cub Scouts!!! You didn’t want me but Stranger does and that’s all that matters.

The Background

In my Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, you don’t choose your callings. You are given a calling by the Bishop, the local leader, and whatever you are asked to do, you do it. Of course you are welcome to say no but don't. Just do what you are asked to do.

When we first moved here I was called to be one of two Wolf Leaders in my son Victor’s den. We had about 6 boys when we started and over the last eight months our den grew to 14 and more. I lost count somewhere along the way and things got so crazy that I didn’t even recognize or know the names of all our boys! I showed up and helped the best I could with the activities amid the commotion while trying to keep my 1 and 6 year olds out of harms way. Then we packed up and went home exhausted. We needed help ok? There is a problem, let’s solve it. That’s all I was asking. I don’t think that qualifies me as a trouble maker but I know that’s the way I come across at times.

And in the defense of the other Scout leaders, no one was getting rid of me. At least I’d like to imagine they weren’t! I think it’s natural to feel a little rejected whenever you get released from a calling. “What! I’m not good enough for you? You don’t want me anymore?” But life continues and I will go on to annoy and irritate the next group of people I am called to serve with. Hey, at least they don’t have to live with me!

Smart Habit Saturday

Welcome to another Smart Habit Saturday! We've had a whole month worth of new habit's to work on. Do you feel like you are any closer to your long term goals and resolutions? I do! I picked some habits I liked this last month and I picked some I didn't like but I can say that they have all helped me get a little bit closer to my goals.

The hardest part about SHS is picking just one habit to work on but that is the secret ingredient. If you jump in and try to do too much it doesn't always last. Making small changes slowly does last. That's what we're working on here, a lifetime of small changes.

If you are new to SHS find out all about it here: Getting Started with SHS

New Habit - I love my clean desk so much that this week I am going keep my kitchen counter and my sewing machine tables cleaned off as well. I clear the clutter on a daily basis but they don't stay cleared. My goal is to clear them off and learn how to make them stay that way.

Week #4 Clean off desk - This was an easy habit and it feels so great to sit down to a clean desk every day.

Last week I didn't want to commit to a new habit of going to bed without snacking because I thought it would be too hard. I'm such a big baby! Finally on Wednesday I broke down and just did it! Shockingly it didn't kill me but I did have a hard time sleeping on an empty stomach. The second and third nights it was easy and I would say I'm on my way to a new habit. I should have known I can do anything I set my mind to do. With your help of course! Who knows, maybe this new habit will help me find the skinny side of my closet!

Week #3 Planner review - This is easy to do along with my personal prayers every morning and night.

Week #2 Two personal prayers and one family prayer every day - I still have to think a little bit to make sure I say these prayers every day so it's not quite a habit yet.

Week #1 Clean the toilet once a day – I thought this would be a habit that I would drop as soon as possible because who wants to clean their toilet every single day? Surprisingly, I do, I do! I love having a clean toilet. It is so easy to do and it is so worth it! I think it has finally become a habit.

The Wisdom of a Nine Year Old

I received a book in the mail the other day. Victor said, “Great! I want to read it!”

“I don’t think you’d be interested in it. It’s a book for parents.

“Yes I would.”

“It’s not a story book. It’s a learning book and you probably wouldn’t like it.”

“What kind of learning book?”

“Oh, it’s about how to be a better person and a better Mother and wife.”

“Well, why would you need that? You’re already the best Mother in the world.”

“Thanks! But I need to learn to have more patience with my kids sometimes.”

“Well if you could find a book like that then it would be the last book you’d ever have to read.”

About Blogging

The poll and some blogging business.

I re-wrote an old post, Organize Your Sibling Rivalry, to publish in my newspaper column.

I want to thank Julie for nominating me for a blog award. Isn't she so sweet? She's also very talented and I was pleased to see that she was nominated for an award as well, Best Writing. So please go vote for her. While you're there if you want to vote for me too I wouldn't feel terribly bad about it. Julie nominated my blog for Most Inspirational and another kind but nameless person nominated me for Blog You'll Never Stop Reading.

A lot of you have been nominated too. I can't wait to vote for you and I'm looking forward to finding lots of fun new blogs to read!

Here is a new poll to add to your voting pleasure and by blogging I mean writing, posting, visiting and commenting on blogs. You could even count the time you spend take bizarre photos of the inside of your fridge to post on your blog!

Check out my last poll About Exercise. I expected that most people would work out in the morning but I was surprised to see how many of you are allergic to exercise! I wonder if there is a cure for that. I've heard it is fatal.

About Shoes; most of you have your shoes pretty well under control. For the rest of you, I'm going to start a support group on letting go of the shoes. I'm going to name it Shoe Crossing and we'll let our unworn shoes out into the wild to track their travels. My goal is to make the whole world a shoe store.

As you can see, I have switched to the new Blogger. I would have done it sooner but I tried my template on a test blog and it wouldn't load. Then one day I lost my head with label envy and clicked the Switch button anyway and it worked! I don't get all the fancy features that the rest of you get but I love the labels. I have added them to a few posts but it will take me a while to get to them all. I was happy to find out I can add labels to several posts all at once instead of editing each individual post. Yay for the new blogger!

Is there anyone out there who wants to fix my template to work with the new blogger and would be willing to trade for some Organizing Bags? I would love it!
