I'm dying to know.. did the kids win anything?

They did actually! We just found out about it today. Victor won some adorable hand crafted hair clips. Don't you think he'll look sweet in them? His hair is long enough but I think he's unselfishly planning on giving them to his sisters.

I, of course, didn't win a single thing just like I predicted. It might have helped if I had entered more than two drawings but still...

I'm Found!

Three cheers for Stranger who got my computer working today. Hip hip horray! Hip hip horray! Hip hip horray!!!

I'm back but but a little behind on my bloggy commitments. Not only have I not posted a winner yet for the Dog Days Of Summer Bloggy Giveaway but I also missed Smart Habit Saturday! I'm so sorry!!! When we do it this week you'll have to leave two links ok?

Wait till you see the organizing that went on while Stranger was looking for our Windows disks to reinstall and fix my computer. There is always a silver lining on every organizing cloud isn't there? As soon as I have caught up on about 500 e-mails I will post some photos.

I will get to what we have all been waiting for, the drawing. First of all go look at my fabulous Lazy Organzing Hooks that I am now selling. I still have a few left so you can still place an order. I hope everyone will post photos so I can see how cute they look in your houses!

Next, take a look at all the weird organized/unorganized comments on my give away post. They were so fun to read and made me laugh!

Now thanks to my friend Rosie for helping me pick a winner (randomly). I was going to make the whole thing complicated and difficult like I like to do but she simplified the process for me so now I can easily say that...

Organizing Iron HooksDream from the Burman Family blog has won four free Lazy Organizing hooks! I can tell just by looking at her that she's organized. Can't you? Go visit her to congratulate her on her new hooks but more importantly on her new pregnancy! Here was her comment:

"The weird organizing thing about me is that I have to pack & load the car-not my husband. I like to know where things are so I can get to them when I need them. Thanks for adding me to your drawing!"

Congratulations Dream!!! I am so excited to send you the hooks and since you didn't throw a fit (kidding!) I will let you choose between the rust color and the antique white. Just send me your address and I'll get them shipped.

Thanks to all of you who participated in the drawing and don't forget that we are still on for Smart Habit Saturday this week so I hope to see all the old timers and some new people there as well.

It's so great to be back in the land of the bloggers!

I'm Lost!

My computer is down from a lighting storm last night and I'm lost without it! I have a laptop but it doesn't have my e-mail or passwords or anything else I need to conduct business. Whine! Until Stranger gets home to take a look at my desk top, (what would I do without him?) please use thelazyorganizer @ gmail dot com if you've ordered hooks or if you have any questions. Thanks!

And by the way, I am cracking up at all your comments on my Organizing Hooks give-away! It's been fun reading all of them. I made the mistake of telling my kids about the big give away carnival at Rocks in My Dryer. They spent hours yesterday signing up to win things like Breast Cancer Awareness bracelets and breast feeding advocacy note cards. I'm really hoping my nine year old wins the note cards so he can write his birthday thank you notes on them next year.

Dog Days Of Summer Bloggy Giveaway

I had to participate in this give away because guess what? I have something to give away!

I just got my beautiful, amazing Lazy Organzing Hooks in the mail last week so I'm itching to give some away. Go take a look to see how great they are.

Organizing Iron HooksThe drawing is for 4 new, pretending to be old, Triple Iron Hooks in Rust or Antique White. (You get what you get and you don't throw a fit.) I will pay the shipping in the United States or to Canada. Anywhere else and you are on your own.

Here is what you do to be entered in my random drawing:
  • Leave a comment on this post telling me one weird Organized/Unorganized thing about you.
  • Go see if you're as weird as Andrea, Corrie and me.
  • The Deadline will be Thursday at 7:00 p.m. or whenever I get around to closing the comments.
  • Wait till Friday when I draw your name and post it here. (Of course you are going to win this! You didn't doubt it did you?)
That's it unless I forgot something. Happy Win Free Stuff week. Thanks for hosting Shannon!

I Want a Raise

We had a big family counsel tonight to discuss life, the universe and everything in it. For a split second the topic of moving came up, which it inevitably does for some reason even though we have no intention of ever moving again, and created an uproar in the children's seats.

"We are not moving. You promised we wouldn't move again for at least 7 years!" Victor cried.

Apparently our move a year and a half ago was such a good experience that we still have fond memories of it.

Persistence so kindly filled us in on the facts of the situation. "After we have grown up and moved out of the house and you guys are in charge," she explained, "then you can move if you want to."

Thanks for explaining it to us sweetie.

All I want to know is, once we get to be in charge, does that mean they start paying us an allowance?

Smart Habit Saturday

If you are new to SHS find out all about it here: Getting Started with SHS. Click here to read more SHS posts. Please don't forget to link back to this post so your readers can find out more about SHS.

"Thus a new and good habit is born, for when an act becomes easy through constant repetition it becomes a pleasure to perform and if it is a pleasure to perform it is man's nature to perform it often. When I perform it often it becomes a habit and I become its slave and since it is a good habit this is my will."

By OG Mandino The greatest Salesman in the World

Have you ever noticed that when you drive somewhere new it seems to take forever but then the return trip is always much faster? Repetition naturally makes tasks easier.

My goal was to work out five days this last week and I am proud to say that I made it three days before I came down with a cold. Hopefully I will get feeling better quickly and I'll get back to the gym next week. If not then I will just take a break.

My habit this week is going to be for my kids (ages 9 and 7). They already help with all the meals and they also have some things they make by themselves like pancakes, muffins, cake, etc., but I want them to learn to make meals by themselves. Victor has made Sloppy Joe's a couple times and we all love it. And Persistence asked me this week if she could start making bread by herself. So my goal is to have the kids each plan, shop for and cook a meal all by themselves once a week.

I don't know why but I feel like it's important for my kids to be as independent as they can. One of my favorite kid movies is Matilda. I love how she studies and learns to do everything for herself. I wish I had been that motivated and independent when I was young so I guess that's why I think the more my kids learn to do things for themselves the better. No matter what happens in their lives, it can't hurt!

I can't wait to find out how everyone is doing on their habits this week. Thanks for joining me!

My daily checklist for my habits if you want to edit it to use for yourself - Smart Habits

Here are the other habits I have been working on this year. Some of them are already habits and some of them still need a lot of work but all of them have improved my life. I think my greatest habit of all is my habit of making new habits!

Exercise - 3 days this week, not bad.
Bed/Bath/Laundry - So great!
Using Habit Chart - Loving it!
Using Chap stick - Great! Oh yes. My life has been greatly improved by chap stick people.
Reading scriptures with kids - Good.
Getting to bed early, again - Nadda.
Crafts with kids - Great this week! The kids have been sewing almost every day.
Using Crock Pot - Using it a few times a week.
Paperwork, again, and again - Terrible
Have lunch ready by Noon - Ok
Turn Off Computer during chores - Habit
Become a Dresser - Habit
Playing games with my kids - Not great
Reading my Church Magazine - Habit
Kitchen and studio clutter free - Terrible
Clear Counters - Great
Clear Desk - Need to work on this
Review Planner - Habit
Daily Prayer - I've been forgetting this one lately
Clean Toilet - I have three toilets so I'm doing one every day.

Warning! I am not organized. View this website at your own risk.

Little Girl's HairstylesI need to get out of the organizing business and get into the hair styling business! You people went crazy over my pony tail post. Thank you! I've never gotten so many comments on a post in my whole bloggy life! Here is another photo for you pony tail maniacs. I tried this one after K at Family Historian left a link to photos
"At my house everyone can and will help but what do we do when we have company? Well we put them to work of course!"
Find out how in my latest article for GNMParents.

In other news, I don't think I've ever claimed to be organized and if I did I was lying. My only claim is that I try really hard. Really. Do you know anyone who tries harder than me to get organized? I didn't think so.

When I saw this comment about my website at Stumble Upon I laughed my head off for a few days...

"I like this site - interesting, useful tips on organizing your home life. There are useful photos, good details, blah, blah, blah. HOWEVER, I don't find the site all that well organized. I mean . . . is that ironic, or what?"

and then I thought that maybe I could get my website a little more organized for all of you since I love you so much. I decided to start with my Flickr photos since they're not even really part of my website but... you know. That took about three days and then I got a brain cramp so that's as far as I got. Maybe someone else can humiliate me into organizing the rest of my site. Maybe not. But there are new photos over there at Flickr and they all link back to the original post where I used them. That was a lot of work so I hope I get lots of credit for it.

Did you know that you can subscribe to my Flickr photos? I just discovered that! I hope someone else will subscribe to them so I'm not the only one. It's kind of sad when I see the little "1 Subscriber" up there on bloglines and I know it's me. Not that you guys aren't looking at them because, wow! I have a lot of views on there. I had no idea anyone really looked at those. And this week I even got my very first comments. Thanks Rowiegrl!

Ok, I was in bed but then I had to come to my studio to get a ribbon for a little emergency purse organizing idea (I'll show you later) and I got distracted by something shiny. It was my computer and before I knew what I was doing I was writing this post. Good night!

10 Weird Organized/Unorganized Things about Me

Target Shower Caddy
1. I sleep with my planner every night so I don't forget to look at it in the morning. I still forget to look at it in the morning.

2. I have the attention span of a very organized four year old. I can look at my planner and see that I have a dentist appointment that day and still forget to go to the appointment.

3. I got an organizational high from sewing loops on my towels so they would stop falling off their hooks.

4. When I sew with patterns I fold them back up on their original fold lines so they will fit exactly back into their envelopes. See Mom? I wasn’t doing it just to annoy you. I still do it!

5. I love my houseplants. Sometimes I love them so much that they start growing mushrooms. The rest of the time they don’t so much feel the love.

6. I set up my computer to remind me when my friend’s and family’s birthdays are coming up. Not because I’m organized enough to call them or send them a card or a gift but so that the next time I see them I can say, “Hey, I was thinking about you on your birthday!” I think that makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside don’t you?

7. I get lightheaded and my heart races when I walk down the container isle in a shopping super store.

8. I wear my cell phone around my neck so I don’t leave it on the roof of my car for someone to steal. Is it technically called stealing if you put a note on something that says, “I was too dumb to take care of this so you are welcome to have it”?

9. I collect storage containers like some people collect spoons. They’re useful but also oh so pretty to look at.

10. I don’t see clutter, I see organizational possibilities!

Let me know if you want to post your own Weird Organizing list so I can come read it!

Sugar N Spice

Little Girl's Hair, Ponytails

Looking at my two girl's hair in this post, one blond and one brown, made me think of sugar and spice. Not only does it describe their coloring but their personalities as well!

Karen at Family Briefs asked me to show how I do the ponies in their hair. It made me laugh that someone asked for my advice on hair because I am not a primper, on myself or my girls!

Two High Ponies

Little Girl's Hair, Ponytails

I see so many cute girls wearing ribbons and bows with everything coordinated but the most I can manage is a few pony tails to keep their hair out of their eyes. Persistence is growing her bangs out so it's a necessity and Lovely wants her hair "pretty" too.

Four Diagonal Ponies

Little Girl's Hair, Ponytails

I found the elastics at a hair supply store for half the price I was paying at Walmart and was so excited to find clear and black and brown for a change which look good with any outfit.

Little Girl's Hair, Ponytails

The elastics are so cheap that I just cut them out of their hair at night. It fast and easy and painless. Just make sure your girls know not to try this themselves or they will be growing out more than their bangs. Ask me how I know!

Five Diagonal Ponies

Little Girl's Hair, Ponytails

Yes those are tweezers Lovely is picking her nose with. What else would they be for but booger extraction?

Two High and Two Low

Little Girl's Hair, Ponytails

I use a rat tail comb and a spray bottle and with the little Lovely I have to work FAST! That means things aren't always straight and even but I'm getting better at it.

Little Girl's Hair, Ponytails

And she is getting better at holding still. Well, I wouldn't say holding still but at least she's not climbing off the counter. I sit her in front of the mirror while she "organizes" our baskets of clips and elastics. It's great practice for her to learn how to put the basket of clips away before she gets out the elastics or the "Barbie" pins. (Do your girls call them that too?)

Little Girl's Hair, Ponytails
Cleaning the mirror with the spray bottle and a wash cloth is also a great diversion.

Three and Two Bigger Ponies

Little Girl's Hair, Ponytails

I've even been known to hide a baggie full of Craisins in our stash for her to munch while she gets pretty.

Three and Two Smaller Ponies With Side Curls

Little Girl's Hair, Ponytails

Little Girl's Hairstyles Three Two One

I'm sure all you creative types can come up with your own fabulous versions of these ponies with ribbons and bows and the works. Show me what you've got!

I forgot to mention how cute it is, when you have a tiny girl, to make little ponies all over her head. Especially if her hair has some curl to it. I did this a few times with Lovely's hair but I never got a photo of it. If you start when they're little they get used to having things in their hair and they don't complain. One year olds are the worst at pulling things out!

I keep remembering new things to tell you!

If your girls are going to be outside with these hair styles make sure you put sunscreen on every single part.

I try to be as careful as I can when I'm doing the girls hair but it still hurts them sometimes and they would like to cry. What I have taught them is to say, "Ow!" instead, which doesn't hurt my ears as much. Just because their head hurts doesn't mean my ears should have so suffer! I always use conditioner in their hair to make it easier to brush the snarls out but I will still often hear, "Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow," and on and on. Which I can handle!

Oh, and one last tip. I put a tiny bit of regular, not leave in, conditioner in our hair when it's wet and I don't wash it out. It's very dry here so our hair needs it. If you have dry hair like we do this may work for you too. The bonus is that one big bottle of conditioner lasts us for years!

We're New Parents!

We’ve adopted a sweet little girl! We brought her home last Thursday. The adoption isn’t final yet but I couldn’t wait to share the good news!

Little Girl and ChickensWe actually have to prove to the authorities that we can go six months without her head getting chewed off by the neighbor’s dog and then we can officially call her our own. Until then we are still benefiting from all the eggs she’s giving us and, oh, did I say it was one little girl? I meant 11 little girls and we love them all! Of course we have our favorites but we would never tell them that. At least not until they’re older and we need to use it against them.

Aren't they adorable? I don’t even know why we had kids when we could have just had chickens because most of the time I can’t tell them apart. They fight the better part of each day and when they’re not fighting they’re eating. They’re noisy and disobedient and they stink. They never clean up after themselves and they have terrible table manners.

Little Girl Feeding ChickensChickens are actually better than kids in a lot of ways because they feed us breakfast, although not in bed and we have to cook it ourselves. They never whine that I’m spending too much time on the computer and they don’t cry if I won’t let them read book #4 (that's how behind the times we are) in the Harry Potter series because none of their friends are reading it. In fact they don’t even have any friends. We home school them so they can be un-socialized but I swear to you that they were weird and unfashionable chickens when we got them. Really.

If they fight too much or just plain annoy me then I can lock them in a cage for three days with nothing to eat but bread and water until they’ve learned their lesson and no one can take them away from me for doing it.

Chicken TimeoutSpeaking of bread and water, they never complain about my cooking. They eat anything and everything I so lovingly prepare for them and they don’t even mind that it’s all smashed together and thrown in the dirt.

Little Girl and ChickensOur biggest concern is keeping them safe from the neighbor’s dog. If it even comes near my little girls again then I am so going to be mad at it because that’s really about all I can do. Get really, really mad. I might even call up the neighbors in a fit of rage and say, “Your dog chewed our chicken’s head off!”

“Sorry about that,” they’ll say.

And then I’ll say, “Thank you!” and slam the phone down because I am really mean and take charge like that when I need to be.

Who knew I'd be a rocker some day?

I never thought I was the type but I'm going to take Christine's word for it because she gave me the Rockin' Girl Blogger award and she also participates in Smart Habit Saturday. We know all those women Rock! Thanks Christine!
Some other rockers I read are:
Meckmom with her fabulous organizing ideas.
My friend Rosie at My Little Corner of Chaos who chears me up with her happy words and photos.
Susan at Friday Style because I know nothing about fashion and she does.
Mom Unplugged because she's TV free and loving life.
All the rest of you rock too and you know it. Thanks for reading the life of Lazy!

Smart Habit Saturday

Welcome!

If you are new to SHS find out all about it here: Getting Started with SHS. Click here to read more SHS posts. Please don't forget to link back to this post so your readers can find out more about SHS.

"In truth, the only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies in the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure. Thus, the first law I will obey, which precedeth all others is-I will form good habits and become their slaves."

"As a child I was slave to my impulses; now I am slave to my habits, as are all grown men. I have surrendered my free will to the years of accumulated habits and the past deeds of my life have already marked out a path which threatens to imprison my future. My actions are ruled by appetite, passion, prejudice, greed, love, fear, environment, habit and the worst of these tyrants is habit. Therefore, if I must be a slave to habit let me be a slave to good habits. My bad habits must be destroyed and new furrows prepared for good seed."

The Greatest Salesman in the World, by OG Mandino

We all know how strong an influence our habits can be in our lives but have you ever though of being a slave to them? Are you imprisoned by them? If bad habits are keeping you from reaching your life's goals then you are.

So we have two options here: bad habits = the easy path = not reaching our goals, or good habits = the difficult path = success! If you're not choosing the second path the you are choosing the first one by default so let's get working on those good habits!

I'm going to work on exercise this week. NormallyI don't have a problem getting to the gym but something has come over me this year and I have too many other things I want to be doing with my kids! You can tell by looking at me too. I am going to make a goal of working out five days this next week to whip my butt back into shape. Starting tomorrow!

I’ve Felt Your Pain

"You mean I’m supposed to be enjoying all the dirty diapers and the spitting up and never getting enough sleep and being stuck at home all day with little people who can’t speak English but babble in their cute little voices until I think I’m going to lose my mind? Let’s get serious people. And honest."

Look at me, I'm quoting myself. And only a week late. Find out more about The Pain at GNMParents.

Get Organized You Lazy Bum!

Newspaper ArticleWriting articles for the local small town newspaper has been really fun in a creepy kind of way. I cringe whenever someone says, "Oh, you're Lara Gallagher? You're the one who writes those articles for the newspaper?" My eye brows try to jump off my face and my voice gets really tiny as I squeak out a, "Yeeeeees?" Then I wait to find out if they're going to tell me what an idiot I am for telling the world all my deep dark organizing secrets or if they're going to start crying over some inspiring (don't laugh) thing I wrote.

Actually, none of those things has ever happened but there is always a first so I am trying to be mentally prepared. Most people just describe a particular article that they liked and that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

People do send me e-mails saying that such-n-such article I wrote made them cry but I tend to think they're fibbing to me. Ok. Maybe they thought about crying but did they actually cry? ("My eyes bleeding!" as my two year old would say.)

Some day I want to see some real honest to goodness, "Thanks for sharing your organizing story because if you can do it then clearly everyone in the entire universe is capable of getting organized and realizing that has changed my life," kind of tears.

Today at the park a friend told me that she was sitting in an organizing class given by her Church when the teacher pulled out one of my articles and started reading from it.

Can you believe someone actually quoted me?

No.

I simply cannot believe that.

If it is true then I hope it was something really profound like, "Your house isn't too small. You just have too much crap in it," or, "Get that junk room cleaned out you lazy bum!" Oh wait. I didn't post those in the newspaper. Those were pep talks I was giving myself yesterday.

Well, now that I've written them down, feel free to quote me as much as you like and then the next time I see you in town we can cry and hug each other while we share touching stories about how we can finally love ourselves now that our closets are organized by color.

Snort.

Happy Independence Day!

Sometimes I forget what this blog is all about. ME! Who cares about organizing. Don't you just want to read more about my exciting life?

Like how there was a sign at my gym that read, "We will be closed on the 4th of July to celebrate the 4th of July." Seriously. If you can't laugh at other people then what good are they?

And then there was tonight when Stranger was telling Victor how we came up with his name. I forgot all about this but apparently we flushed the toilet, listened really hard and that's what we named our first born. I think you had to be there so just trust me that it was funny with the sound effects and all.

Man I love firework pictures. Don't you? Thanks for the photos Victor. Go ahead and put seventy five cents in your check book but next time can you get one of the big red heart with the arrow shooting through it? How do they do that?

My addiction these days is chicken quesadillas made with pepper jack cheese on whole wheat tortillas. If that doesn't sound good to you then you can just go to bed without dinner because anyone who could get sick of them after only eating them every day for a month obviously has a problem.

Speaking of eating disorders, do you know what you do when you have a house guest for a week who is a picky eater and won't touch anything that's not related to a bagel? You give him his very own loaf of bread and tell him to have at it. Then you watch his eyes light up like it's Independence day all over again. I didn't know whole grains could do that to a kid.

Two Sisters

It was one of those days that make your heart feel like it's ripping out of your chest.

But in the best way possible because every time you saw them together you had to catch your breath at the miracle of love you were beholding.

And you hated every precious moment because you knew it would be over before you could blink.

Except that it wasn't.

They were best buddies the entire day. All because Stranger got tired of Lovely hitting people and he made her go to her room until she was ready to talk about what she had done instead of throwing her limp body on the floor in tears because her father had said a stern word to her.

Who has ever heard of a two year old going to time out until she could discuss her behavior? Apparently Stranger because after two minutes in her room she cracked the door open and said, "I ready talk." She apologized to Persistence and then she climbed up into her sister's lap and lay perfectly still while Persistence held her close and tickled her arm.

"Is Persistence your best buddy," I asked? "She my best buddy Mommy. She my best buddy."

"I'll get her out of the car," Persistence later informed me. "I'll take her potty." "I'll hold her hand."

"Take our picture together Mom. We're best buddies."

Ok but only if you promise to love each other forever.

This is sad and wrong.

Hopefully the photos are working now. Can you tell me why blogger changes the html when I publish some of my posts? I'm especially having the hardest time with the videos I put on my blog. Why? Why would they want to make my life more difficult in this way? What did I ever do to them?

Did anyone go watch the chicken video? Click on the link below, watch the video and tell me what you think.

Ok. I am never eating store bought chicken or eggs again. Maybe.

Vegan anyone?

Definitely something to think about.

The Moody Teenagers

These photos don't convey how much fun we've had with these chickens. When they're not trying to kill each other or peck our toes off we love them. Kind of like kids.
