June Habit: Meal Plans Again!

Finally! We did a good job with meal plans this week!!! We learned something though. It's much too hot for meals that have to go in the oven.

Next week we will be eating more salads and stir fry. I finally made it to town today so we are stocked up on fresh fruits and vegetables for a while. Tomorrow we will be dusting off the green drink machine. It's time to start eating healthy again and it should also help me with my low iron problems.

Have a great week!

June Habit: Meal Plans Again!

I don't know what my problem is but I cannot get back into a cooking routine. It's not because I don't want to cook. It's because I have no idea what to cook and nothing sounds good to me. One of my favorite meals is black bean burritos with homemade wheat tortillas. I put lots of fresh cilantro and lime on them and I could eat them every day. My kids will eat them but if I make them more than once a month they call the authorities and report me for child abuse. Stranger came home with cup 'o noodles for them to eat tonight. I think THAT is child abuse. (Stranger and I did make a great dinner tonight but we took it to book club so the kids didn't get any!)

The moral of the story is that I need to start making what I want to eat and let everyone else deal with it. (Where have I heard that before?) Having beans for dinner every night is better than no dinner right? You would think. But as my kids like to say when I tell them they can eat what I made or they can starve, "I'd rather starve."

Go for it!

Good luck with your habits this week!

June Habit: Meal Plans Again!
I made two dinners this week. I guess that's better than none! I also make sour dough pancakes this morning which was pretty amazing since I have to start them the night before. I planned ahead! Tonight I'm starting sour dough pizza dough.

We did some organizing this week but somehow the house doesn't look any better. How does that happen? Oh ya, kids happen!

Good luck with your habits this week!

I was listening to Dr. Laura a few days ago when a distraught caller was frustrated by the lack of control she had over her life. If she started a new diet she did great for two days and then she would go off of it. The same thing happened with exercise or getting up early, etc. She felt those things were proof that she could not control anything in her life.

Dr. Laura responded by saying that the woman did in fact have control over all of those things. She decided to start a new diet and two days later she decided to go off of it. How true that is!!! I need to remember that when I'm feeling like I am lacking self control. Every day I do exactly what I decide to do, good or bad!

Habits make those decisions easier but even without habits we get to choose each and every action we make.

June Habit: Meal Plans Again!
I am finally feeling up to some new habits but I know I need to revisit some old habits first. This month it will be meal plans again. It's been weeks since I have taken any responsibility for meals and I know my family is sick of it. It's actually making me sick too because of all the crap we've been eating. We were on such a healthy food binge for a while there and I want to get back to that.

In addition to meals I am trying to get the house back in some kind of order. We're doing a little bit every day. Would you believe me if I said I still haven't unpacked my suitcase that I took to the hospital when I had Sweetness two weeks ago? You know it! Maybe that will be my project for tomorrow. Unless I get distracted by a bag of chocolate chips and spend all morning making cookies instead.

Have a great week!

May Habit: Sit on the couch every day and do nothing but hold my new baby.
I have a new habit for this last week of May and I'm really excited about it! I am going to take it easy for another week before I start working on habits again. For now I will just be trying to get my house back in order after letting everything go this last month.

I got up and vacuumed this morning and was disgusted by the dirty floors and walls and all the little piles of junk in every corner. It's been a while since I was up and around enough to see or care about any of it but now it's time for some spring cleaning.

Have a great week!

May Habit: Sit on the couch every day and do nothing until I have this baby.
I hope all of your new habits are going well. Mine is going as well as can be expected. My kids and husband are sure tired of my helplessness and so I am. It's good for them though don't you think?

Congratulations to all of you who are hanging in there with SHS while I am temporarily out of it. I can't tell you how excited I am to have this baby so I can get into some new habits myself. I'm sure you can imagine! I have grand plans of getting my schedule organized. I know it may sound impossible with four homeschooled kids at home but I think it's especially vital when I'm trying to juggle as many things as I am. I know my kids love having a schedule so they can know what to expect. In fact they like to know down to the minute what I have planned every day or they go crazy. We we've doing crazy a lot these days.

Crazy or not, have a great week!

I'm picking a new habit. I haven't been able to meet with my new bookkeeper yet because of tax season so I still don't know what I'm doing with Quickbooks. I don't want to start going through receipts and recording things until I can meet with him to get everything set up. Otherwise I will just waste a lot of time trying to figure it out by myself and probably do it all wrong.

Instead I'm going to try to keep my fridge cleaned out. I spent some time today cleaning up after a wayward cucumber. It was not pretty. Every day I am going to look through the fridge and pull out one dish or thing that needs to be cleaned out or thrown away. It will be so much easier to do it a little bit at a time rather than having big cleaning sessions in there. I hate those. Even when I make the kids do them instead of me, I still hate them.

Have a great Habit week!

My grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them.

Ether 12:27
That is one of my favorite scriptures. It gives me hope that I won't have these weaknesses of mine forever.

April is my month of getting financially organized and apparently learning to bake with sour dough because it seems that I'm spending every spare minute babysitting my sour dough projects. Today it was sour dough pancakes, muffins and pizza. Tonight I'm starting on a new sour dough bread recipe because the last one was terrible. I used to think I had to be organized and prepared to bake homemade bread because it took several hours from start to finish. That's nothing! Sour dough bread takes days!

Anyway, if I hadn't spent all day baking I definitely would have worked on our new budget. Except that I'm not really going to make a budget. I just want to keep track of our spending so we are more aware of areas we can cut back. Even though I already know the area where we need to cut back. Eating out.

We have already cut back a lot since I've been doing better with meal plans but Stranger works out of town and that is a big eating out expense. I need to teach him to start packing some of his own meals. Or he needs to teach me. Or something.

My Mom spoke to a homeschooling group this week about being Rich On Any Income. It is a book that she took a class on years ago and it motivated her to start budgeting. What perfect timing for my goals this month!

My first assignment is to go through all our credit card statements and figure out what we spent in each expense category last year. It's going to be a big job so we'll see if I can get started on it tomorrow. I'll try my best to stay out of the kitchen and not play with the sour dough too much.

I have inherited Quickbooks from my MIL that I'm going to start using for my business and home finances and we have a new toy to get our receipts organized. I'll share more about that later.

Have a great Habit week!

It's a new month and time for a new habit! I'm pretty excited about the habits I've already worked on this year. They are things that are making a big difference in my life. In January it was meal planning, February was changing my laundry system to one load a day and keeping the van cleaned out and March was paperwork. No more piles of mail. That's my biggest accomplishment of all!

This month I need to work on a habit I can accomplish sitting on my butt because I'm eight months pregnant and not feeling very spunky. I've been talking about getting our finances in order so maybe it's time to focus on that.

We're pretty conservative when it comes to spending but I would like to keep track of where the money is going to see if we can cut back in certain areas. I would like to get busy implementing some of Janine's ideas and I am also going to meet with a bookkeeper to get my business finances organized and under control. That sounds like a lot so I will have to tackle it a little bit at a time.

I can't wait to find out what your new habits will be!

I've been plowing through paperwork all week and have unearthed some interesting treasures; overdue bills, baby growth charts, my voter registration card and last but not least a $2,000 check that is now too old to cash. You would think we didn't like money or something by the way we just leave our mail piled in the corner (and the floor and the table...). But really how often do you get $2,000 in the mail?

I also took care of an insurance request for copies of our birth certificates that Stranger handed me two weeks before it was due. It's not like it was that difficult a task or anything. I'm organized right? I could go right to my file folders, pull them out and fax them right? Right. Expect that I never ordered a birth certificate for my now THREE YEAR OLD BABY! Is that so shocking when it took us two years just to name her? It shouldn't be.

Guess what I do when I get the mail now? Pile it? NO, file it!!! Well, at least that's my new motto. Like I said before, my files are organized. They're perfect. They're flawless. My system for getting the papers into the files is not so perfect. In fact it's so flawed that it doesn't actually exist.

But that is all changing and it's changing now. I'm just glad I have one more week to get my paperwork under control before I have to start working on a new habit.

Have a great week!

Act when you think.

People who are able to do great, large works do not say tedious things like, "Let us do it if there is time." If something is thought of, it is disposed of at once. This is a very important thing in life.

by Shiniki Suzuki in Ability Development from Age Zero
Do you want to be someone who does great things? Getting organized and learning new habits builds a strong foundation and leaves you more time and energy for action. I try every day to act on my thoughts. Using my planner I write things down that I want to act on and then I do everything I can to follow through. It's a difficult habit to form but it's something we all need to work on. We can do it!

I'm still working on getting and keeping my studio organized every day. It looks so much better and I have been able to keep the clutter cleared off my desk. I never thought it possible! I'm getting excited about getting cabinets in here so I have a place for everything but they won't do me any good without good habits.

Guess what? My island is finally cleared off too! Man, that was painful. Now I can pile my paperwork on it and start getting it filed away in my perfectly organized files that I never use.

I hope you had a great week!

Can you believe I've been working on my studio for two weeks now and it's still not done? It's not the fun sort of organizing project that we all love. It hurts my brain! I working on it a little bit at a time though and it looks and feels really good.

When I dumped all the clutter into boxes I stacked them on my kitchen island. That has been a great incentive to get it all put away. I still have one more box to go through and then I will finish up the paperwork.

A Smart Habit studio. It's a good thing.

I'm not working in my studio today though. I'm organizing in another room and it's fun! I will tell you all about the excitment next week for Talk About Tuesday.

I didn't spend 15 minutes every day working on my studio (office/craft room) this week but I did spend two good days cleaning up. The first day I walked into it and about wanted to cry because I was so everwhelmed that I didn't even know where to start. You never feel that way do you? Finally I started throwing everything that didn't belong in there into boxes and got it out. I also got my knitting supplies organized which had been taking over because I've been knitting up a storm lately.

The next day my girls helped by putting away everything in the to-go boxes. My three year old put away an entire box of stuff by herself for the first time! She was excited to help so that was my clue that it would be a good teaching moment. I sat down with her and we talked about where each thing belonged. She went on her way and in a few minutes she returned with an empty box. I was excited but she was even more excited about what she had accomplished! As far as I know she put everything away properly because I haven't found any suprises. My older kids used to like to hide things instead of putting them away so then they just got to try again. They have finally figured out that it's easier to put things away correctly the FIRST time. It's easier AND it makes your Mother happier!

The second day I also vacuumed and dusted every square inch of my studio. It's looking better and there is room now to start doing paperwork. See? I can do this! I think I can. I think I can. Stay tuned for more excitment next week!

Look where I got to park yesterday at the mall.

Expectant Mothers Parking SignHow fun is that? Never mind that we walked five miles once we got into the mall. It was important that we didn't wear ourselves out getting to the front door.

Lovely's favorite thing to do these days is open and close doors for me. This can take a considerable amount of time. There are a lot of heavy doors out there that I am not allowed to touch so we had better not think we are headed anywhere fast!

Do you know what helps me the most with my habits? Slowing down. Not only does slowing down help you get things done (yes, really!) but it frees up time for all the little things that really make life more fun and enjoyable. This means that you have to stop trying to do it ALL and start doing what is IMPORTANT. Deciding what that is is the tricky part so I'll leave that up to you.

If I sit in the car for a moment until the kids have all their stuff picked up and their garbage thrown away then I get to enjoy a clean van. If I immediately rush into the house, the kids do the same, leaving all their junk behind.

This month I am going to revisit a habit that I failed miserably with last year and that is keeping my office and paperwork organized. I cannot put this off any longer. If this is the last habit I work on this year I will conquer it! I'm going to spend 15 minutes on it every day while we do our jobs in the morning.

Have a SMART week!!!

This has been a great year so far! I am still going strong with my menu planning. Do you know what helps? I make the kids do it with me in our family counsel for that day and they actually have fun with it. They give me lots of great ideas and they can tell me which meals they want to make themselves. I like to have each of them in charge of one meal a week. I also have them write out our shopping list. Little do they know it's good practice for their writing and spelling skills. My eight year old is a much better cook than speller.

I also love my new one load a day laundry habit. I had some questions from you about how I hang the laundry to dry in the winter but you aren't going to like my answer. I have a Ruck Zuck in my laundry room and I love it! But unfortunately I don't know of any place in the US where you can order one anymore. We bought ours years ago.

You can always use another type of drying rack of course. I just love this one because it is very sturdy, it hangs on the wall and it folds out of the way. It works especially well hung over the sink because I can scrub things out and then let them drip dry. You can read a few other laundry posts here. I tell all about my secret ironing method that I found out isn't so secret because some of you are already using it.

Our van has been much neater this week as well but even though the clutter is gone it is still grossing me out because it's filthy dirty from muddy winter shoes. We vacuum it out once a week but I guess I will have to put up with the rest of it until it gets warm enough to go out and give it a proper scrub.

Have a SMART week!!!

My new laundry habit of doing one load of wash a day and hanging it to dry is going great. Laundry is pretty easy at our house. If you are having trouble with laundry then

  1. You probably have too many clothes.

  2. You have too many clothes.

  3. You need to get rid of some of your clothes.

At our house

  1. The kids help with laundry. My 10 year old son does his own and my eight year old daughter is in charge of putting the rest of our laundry away.

  2. We all have a minimum amount of clothing.

  3. We each have our own towel that we reuse a couple times before washing.

  4. Each bed has one set of sheets that we wash and put right back on the beds.

  5. Laundry never piles up or we would have nothing to wear, sleep in or dry off with.

I'm going to start a new habit this week. The kids and I are going to work on cleaning out the van every day. I try to keep on top of this but most of the time I fail and it ends up looking like a mess. There is no reason why my kids can't pick up their things and bring them into the house so I'm going to be strict in checking it every single day.

I love my new laundry habit! I used to do all the laundry one day a week. This was actually working really well for me. Persistence and I gathered up all the laundry, got it washed, dried, folded, I ironed the few things that needed it and she put everything away. All done.

But my dream is to hang all the clothes to dry to save electricity. I don't know what difference it will actually make in our monthly bill but it just seems so environmentally friendly that I can't help myself. Anything that makes more work has to be fun right? Except maybe not when you're ten. Victor didn't enjoy my new plan yesterday when he had to hang up all his laundry.

So every day this week we have washed a load and hung it to dry. The next day I fold the last load and hang up a new load. I actually look forward to it! I have to put a few things in the dryer for a minute to tumble the wrinkles out but it has worked really well and I get to have all those warm fuzzies of simple living.

I am doing much better with my meal planning these days so January was a great month for me. Who's ready for a new habit? Meal planning is still not set in stone so I need to keep working on it but I will start something new anyway.

My new habit is going to be one load of laundry a day. I usually do all the laundry once a week and that has been working fine except that I would like to hang the clothes to dry instead of using the dryer and I don't have room to hang it all at once. I do have room for one load a day then that load will be dry in time to hang another load the next day. We'll see if this works!

What is your new habit going to be?

Habits, habits, habits. I was talking to a friend about our schedule and how it is always changing. Things have been different around here since I've been pregnant and once the baby gets here they will change again. In a big way. At every age and every stage things change. We have to be flexible but hopefully our good habits help us survive and adapt to all those changes.

I did a couple new things with my cooking this week. I want to incorporate some new grains and seeds into my bread and other cooking so I added some oat flour to my wheat bread and it was good. I tried to find a recipe for oat/wheat bread online but failed. Does anyone have a good one? I am also sprouting my first batch of bean sprouts. Just when I was ready to give up on them my son noticed the tiny sprouts today! Yummy! Now to figure out how to use them.

We went roller skating with the home schoolers today. Have you noticed how weird home schoolers are? We talked about sprouting, wheat
